THE STORY:
The three elder races were believed gone, but now one of them, a xenophobic warrior people has been reawakened. Standing between this enemy and the destruction of all mankind are three heroes; Karis, a warrior woman with a brilliant tactical mind, Duvodas, a pacifist and worker of magic and Tarantio, who harbours a demonic alter-ego named Dace.

WHAT'S GOOD:
The whole bloody thing to my mind! It's so easy to become bogged down in epic fantasy series' these days, so I was refreshed to find a stand-alone novel of such quality. Gemmell manages to describe the origins of the troubles, the war itself and the fates of the elder races whilst still maintaining the personal attatchment to the characters that is his trademark. For me, the book was truly made by the interaction of Tarantio and his dark side, Dace, as they both depend on one another for survival. Also, Karis was a nice change. She wasn't a cruel seductress but neither was she a love-struck moony-eye girly. A nice balance.
WHAT'S BAD:
Because of being a single-volume, the book does sometimes brush over events instead of going into details, but I forgive it that fault.
Perfect for someone who want's to take a dip in a fantasy world without the danger of drowning.

I was given Dark Moon at the 1998 Discworld Convention and finally picked it up a couple of days ago. From the first few pages you are drawn into the story and don't want to put the book down. It tells a classic story of good against evil with a love story and a desperate war mixed in for good measure. An excellent read.

It's all too easy to grade books with a 1 star if we think it's crap, and 5 stars if we loved it. With David Gemmell, it's only too easy to pop on 5 stars because he is such an excellent story teller. This time, however, 5 stars just isn't justified. Don't get me wrong though, it's a quality book that oozes Gemmell's skill with the character and plot development we come to expect, but even this is not up to the standard I now expect from his writing.
For me, there's just not enough of the mystical side to the story, the bit that leaves you wanting to know just that little bit more knowing that information will never come. Tarantio, one of the main characters is great and one of his more unique heros....but, I'm left thinking at the end "Is that it? More!".
It's difficult to articulate what is missing in this book, since it is still very good. It just doesn't have the spark and spangle as some of his other works. If you want a really great story, check out his "Morning Star". One of my favourite.
Worth Reading? Yes.

the missing drenai book.
This would almost fit in the drenai saga, and is better than most of them. Tarantio is almost as good as a hero as druss or waylander. this is one of gemmells finer books.
