3.0 out of 5 stars Pity it came out after Oblivion 23 Feb 2008

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I was a big fan of the early Might & Magic PC games in the nineties, and was looking forward to this to fill the gap left after finishing Oblivion.

Unfortunately this meant I was badly disappointed. The things I love in an RPG are missing. There's no choice in terms of your race, sex, characteristics and appearance. There's not the same level of wandering 'round, talking and exploring. The side quests aren't much to talk about. If there's a map I haven't found it. The game is very linear. The treasure, equipment, spells and alchemy etc are disappointing...

If this had come out a couple of years ago I would have enjoyed it. Unfortunately, since Oblivion, I really think subsequent games should be as good, if not better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant game 1 July 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is a little different from the PC version there are sections in it that didnt make it to the PC version for some reason, these sections add extra bits to the game. The combat is fun and quite well thought out you can approach the combat how you see fit and if you wanted you can try something different, as an example on the stairs by the cliff using ice arrows and watching the orcs slide off was quite amusing or using stealth to get past someone silently is very refreshing especially in some games where characters notice you no matter where you are :)

Some of the things have completely changed from the PC version there is a huge worm in one of the sections where the PC version has dragon like creature IIRC.

Apart from that its a great game I would recommend it to anyone and for the low price you can get it these days you cant go wrong.

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Dark Messiah Elements is an action RPG in classic dungeon crawler style: its all about the exploration and combat. Contrary to "professional" reviewers I think this is a very fun game

Dark Messiah has RPG elements such as choosing different types of weapons and spells to use, and there are four different endings in the game. The gameplay is that of a first-person action-adventure game.

The only really bad thing about the game is that the autosave system is poorly designed. Some quests are dependent on timing or on doing a task in the right way. The autosave system will save throughout the task whether you are doing it correctly or not. If you haven't done it correctly and you fail (the game usually freezes when this happens), then loading the autosave will only lead you to failing the task again. However if you save often and have a large set of saves you can avoid this problem completely.

The combat in Dark Messiah is varied and fun. Regardless of which class you play you have a range of weapons to use. For exmaple if you play as an Archer most of the bows you collect will have some unique effect such as freezing the enemy or spreading poison. Even as an archer you can use several magic spells.
The game also encourages you to use the environment against the enemy, for example kicking them into a fire or over a cliff.

The zones you travel through are of perfect length, you spend just enough time in each place. There is a good range of dark- and light-looking zones, its not all dark and somber. Most of the zones feel huge, the sensation of 'space' is strong and gives the game a great atmosphere.

There's a good variation of enemies to fight: orcs, goblins, necromancers, ghouls, cyclops etc. In most of the zones you get to do something new that gives you a short break from the usual gameplay: fight in a Colosseum-like Battle Arena, use cannons against a horde of enemies, running away from big monsters, chasing down an enemy and so on.

Being a Fantasy game the storyline and characters easily fall into clichés but the same can be said about any Fantasy game. The storyline in Dark Messiah is solid, it has unravelling twists that will influence which of the four different endings you will pursue.

Graphically I think Dark Messiah looks very good, the dungeon environments in particular, there's a good range of colour throughout the game. The game is from 2006 so you can't expect it to look like Skyrim.

I highly recommend Dark Messiah Elements if you are looking for an action RPG with fun first-person combat, classic Fantasy storyline, and variety in your gameplay.
