Product Description

Product Description

For the sake of her infant nephew, Elizabeth has assumed the identity of her dead sister, Ellen Marie. She arrives at the grand Louisiana plantation of Ellen Marie's late husband, wearing traditional black widow's weeds and carrying the baby -- determined that the boy will reach maturity and inherit his rightful fortune...

The family at Oak Shade doesn't suspect they're harboring an imposter; still, they treat her with only frosty politeness. More disturbing are the unusual accidents that seem to be following in her wake, as if planned for her.

And now, the dark Creole, Bernard Delacroix, seems to be seeing through her assumed persona, right into her soul -- where passion and desire war with her "widow's" dark masquerade.

Synopsis

Elizabeth masquerades as her dead sister, Ellen to claim a great Louisiana plantation, the property of Ellen's late husband, as the rightful legacy for her small nephew, only to find herself caught in a web of danger, fear, and passion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Gothic 14 Sep 2014

There was not much romance in the book but I still have it 5 stars because it was an excellent book to read
There were plenty of other things to keeps the mind entertained
There were servants who were in cahoots with the villain
There was drama
A mystery ( several in fact )
A series of unfortunate incidents
A harpy, an opportunist, a grande dame, a laughing scamp, a mad girl and a forbidding master
And finally the ending which neatly wraps things up

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time 11 Jun 2014
By Lit-Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
As another reviewer said, 'save yourself a couple hours of regret.' i wish i had seen that before i read this book, because boy oh boy do i regret wasting my time reading it. This is definitely not a love story. there was no romance. no connection between the H and h. no passion what so ever. plus the book was boring as hell. and the ending was just unbelievable. Do not waste your time reading this crap. It's hours you will never get back.

After the death of her sister and brother in law, Elizabeth feels it is her responsibility to make sure her baby nephew us cared for and receives his inheritance. Afraid that as only his aunt the family will take him away from her, she pretends to be her sister. She takes baby Joseph to her brother in laws family and moves in with them. The large family is a bit strange, and soon enough someone is trying to kill Elizabeth. But who? And why?

This story was just OK. It wasn't Gothic enough for me. A true Gothic story should give me goosebumps, but this story did not do that. And the romance in this book didn't happen til the final pages. All of a sudden the hero is in love with her, but with no explanation as to how it happened.

Overall, a bit boring. OK for free, but I wouldn't pay for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read 28 Jun 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This story is merely good, unlike Patricia Maxwell's other book, Bride of a Stranger, which was excellent. The author most definitely has writing about the sultry, spooky bayou down pat. The romance in this story was a little strained, but did work out in the end. Over all, a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spooky 15 Sep 2014

This was a very mysterious book. I can't say I don't blame Elizabeth for making the decision to take her nephew Joseph to meet his father's family, because obviously she could not provide for him and her sister would have wanted her to.But, once I was introduced to the craziness that was the family I would have immediately devised an escape plan though. Everyone was a suspect on my list,so it was hard to narrow it down.

Elizabeth comes to Louisiana posing as her deceased sister for the sake of her baby nephew Joseph. Elizabeth wants Joseph to be raised with his fathers heritage, but there is something dark going on here. Who can she trust, and do they see through to who she really is?
