ark Kiss by Michelle Rowen is the latest book in the new craze of `Angel' YA. I had a lot of expectations for this book, firstly it is published by Harlequin Teen (who have published some of the best YA around at the moment) secondly, it has a dark and moody cover with a really, really hot guy on the front. Thirdly, it appeared to be about kissing. (I am easily pleased)

For the most part Dark Kiss lived up to the expectation. Did it do something new with the genre? Not really, but it still didn't feel like I had read this book before (which is something that is happening more and more often with these angel books.)

I did really enjoy this book. It was an easy read, it was easy to get into and it didn't take me that long to get through. It had all the required elements, some romance, peril, humour and a ton of UST.
It was well explained, well thought out and didn't drag or lose pace. It did have a couple of scratch the paper, smell the cheese moments but it wasn't too bad and I can always forgive a small amount of cheesiness.

For the most part the characters were good. The males were significantly stronger than the females. Bishop is a good romantic lead. He is brave, brooding and a little cheeky. I also really loved his brother Kraven, who was extremely irritating but impossible to dislike. I think it is the relationship between the two brothers where Rowen really wins here. The drama and pain between them grows page by page and I think that is where the heart of the whole story lies, with two brothers who have done nothing but hurt each other.

My main complaint about this book is Samantha. She is not terrible, she starts well and she ends well. But it is the middle where I had a bit of a problem with her.

Samantha thinks everything about her life is dull and predictable. But then one night at the club she and her best friend, Carly, love, Samantha's crush finally notices her. And Samantha can't resist when kisses her. But the kiss changed her far more than she could ever have guessed. Now she's hungry all the time, and not just for food.

Bishop has a mission on Earth and if he fails, it could mean the end of everything. Two angels and two demons must together against a mutual enemy to keep the universe balanced. Neither side factored in Sam.

When Sam meets Bishop she thinks he is a street kid, and one who isn't all there. But they discover her touch soothes him, helps organise his thoughts. And soon both crave the touch. But romance can't be on the cards for them. Because Bishop is an angel, and Sam is one of the things he must stop to save the world.

Dark Kiss was an interesting take on the recent surge of angel novels hitting the YA market again. It had original characters that were like nothing I had ever read before. Samantha struggles with who she is becoming and questions everything around her, not taking anyone's word for it. She is fiercely loyal and protective and really, just wants to do the right thing.

Bishop isn't like other angels in other novels. He is dark and brooding and committed to his mission and struggles with his mounting feelings for Sam.

There are many loose ends left at the end of this book, leaving us questioning what will happen in the second installment, and ensuring that the wait will be agonising.

Perfect read for any YA, angel, romance etc fan. A welcome addition to the genre.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book as I've never read a book with an angel in before. Or at least not one that I can remember. But this book definitely made an impression on me. I did almost gave it 4 stars instead of 3.5 and though I enjoyed what I read I have a feeling the second book will be a lot better and this really set up for a great sequel. This story follows Sam who is a normal teen in every sense possible, bland looking, good grades and a bit of thievery whilst he parents were going through a divorce. Well... I say normal because she starts off that way, until she gets kissed by the boy next door. Ooops big mistake! Soon afterwards, before she realises how much of a mistake the kiss was, she stumbles into the path of an Angel and shortly afterwards a Demon. The Angel and Demon are currently on Earth to protect the area from another being that is taking peoples souls, creating others who can take their soul through a simple but deadly kiss and now Sam has to help. Or does she? Sam is left in a difficult position because lets face it having all this dumped on you in one night is not something easily dealt with and did I mention she witnessed a murder too? Its not something normal people can deal with easily which is why I guess its a good job that with Sam no longer having a soul, it makes her (and only her) very special indeed.Read more ›
