This is a spy story set in Sweden during WW1 (Spring, 1918). It has a very good story line. The supposedly neutral country of Sweden has been heavily infiltrated by spies from France, Britain and Germany. In Stockholm, high society is alive with intrigue and espionage.
Vivien Leigh plays Madeleine Goddard, who runs an exclusive fashion house, a job that often takes her to Paris. She is also a German spy. Vying for her affections are an English secret agent and the charming aristocratic German deserter Baron von Marwitz (Conrad Veidt).
When her spy cell appears to have been compromised, Madeleine is sent to Paris to discover the fate of other agents. But her affair with von Marwitz is deepening. What is more important to her, love or duty? Or is everything what it seems?
Made in 1937, this is a cracking little spy film. It moves along at pace, it has a great atmosphere about it, helped by it being black and white, and the acting is very good. Veidt hangs like a smiling black bird of prey over every scene he appears in, even those in which he is being charming! There is no doubt his stature and his voice give him a tremendous screen presence.
I really like this film. I think it can be watched time and again. I recommend it to all.

Before the movie starts there's a warning that the quality of the material, due to detoriation, might not be exactly what the viewer would expect. Because of this I was expecting the worst, but the quality was so much better than I expected after the warning. True, it's not as crisp and clear as movies on DVD like for example the ones from Warner Bros, but quality is far better than some that have been released by companies like Delta or Alpha.
I could recommend this DVD to everybody who likes classic films. Not in the least because of the great Vivien Leigh who, I think, plays one of her best parts in a movie. Knowing Vivien Leigh mostly form her parts in American films, this movie has convinced me to look out for more of her early British work.

Set in neutral Sweden at the height of WWI, a young woman (Vivien Leigh) who owns a fancy dress shop but is in actuality a German spy gets romantically entangled with a German deserter (Conrad Veidt) who's come to Sweden to avoid the war. However, neither is what they seem and loyalty to one's country is challenged by love. This romantic spy thriller is very well done and the pre-Scarlett O'Hara Leigh already shows an actress in full command of her talents. It's a bit difficult to accept Veidt (he'll always be CASABLANCA's Major Strasser) as a romantic lead at first but he eventually wins us over. Things seem a bit rushed towards the end but the director Victor Saville (GREEN DOLPHIN STREET) handles the film's only action sequence quite capably. With Robert Newton, Cecil Parker, Joan Gardner and Anthony Bushell.
The ITV DVD from Great Britain is a less than pristine print that could use some working on but its eminently watchable.
