If you love George...!, 24 April 2007
This review is from: Dark Horse Years [5 CD + 2 SACD + 1 DVD] (Audio CD)
I've had this set for quite some time and I've spent a while digesting its contents. It covers the period that had been lost to cd, namely the 'dark horse years' when George set up his own record company. With all earnestness, apart from Cloud Nine, I hadn't heard any of these prior to the box set release.
George had hitherto come up with, to this day, the best ex-Beatle album of all of them (even Imagine!) in All Things Must Pass. After the the tremendous Concert For Bangladesh he went off the boil somewhat. He'd set a pretty high standard.
Nevertheless, he got something of a new breath of life by the first cd in the set, 33 And A Third. Its a shame that the compilation 'The Best Of The Dark Horse Years' isn't still on general release because it serves as a decent summation of this box. Anybody who is particularly unsure should try to get a copy on e-bay to dip their toe in the water.
The general feeling is of a man who was reasonably happy with his lot and happy to start creating music that pleased himself. There are no 'classic albums' here in, I will be quite clear, but there are some beautiful, heartfelt moments. Although agnostic, I've always loved George's religious songs because he poured his heart into them. 'Life Itself' is particularly touching. But he also sang about racing, his court case over My Sweet Lord, he sang his beloved Hoagy Carmichael songs, he sang about magic mushrooms....anything that took him at the time.
He is, bizzarely, the Beatle who sounded the most Beatle-like after the break up. There's also his Live In Japan included, the last time you'll hear him belt out Beatle songs...and the dvd is lovely.
Its pretty easy listening, nothing revolutionary. His last album, Brainwashed, is superior to any of these. If you love George, however, its just a great set of albums to have.

Shedding new light on The Dark Horse, 27 Feb 2004
This review is from: Dark Horse Years [5 CD + 2 SACD + 1 DVD] (Audio CD)
This magnificent box set has been a long time coming, delayed by contractual red tape, and then by Harrison's untimely demise. But, at last, a definitive retrospective of Harrison's latter career (1976-1992) is available. At last, justice is done to this huge part of the Harrison back-catalogue that has been overlooked for too long. 5 discs? 7 discs? Who's telling the truth? The truth is that this great collection comprises the 5 individual studio albums from the era, 'Thirty Three & 1/3', 'George Harrison', 'Somewhere In England', 'Gone Troppo' and 'Cloud Nine', and the double live album 'Live In Japan' on SACD (hence the 7 disc synopsis). All are newly (and very well) remastered, and contain a bonus track or two each. There is also an exclusive DVD which is available only as part of this set, and includes a Dark Horse Feature, promo videos and some previously unreleased live footage, so in actual fact, it's not 5 or 7, but an 8-disc feast of George Harrison. For the casual listener, there may not be much in the way of familiar songs on here (with the exception of 'Cloud Nine' perhaps), and is hardly the definitive George Harrison collection - and it's not supposed to be either. There's no 'All Things Must Pass' or 'Concert for Bangladesh' (both well before 1976), and this collection will probably not appeal to many people other than hardcore fans or collectors. But even for those who are unfamiliar with this particular era of George Harrison's back-catalogue, there is much to explore and many musical highlights that prove that Harrison was a major songwriting talent and prodigious talent in his own right. This box-set leaves nothing out, and as such, you do have to take the rough with the smooth, but on balance, the highlights easily out-number the lighter-weight tracks.

This is a beautiful box set and Olivia Harrison did a great job. It's wonderful to hear this stuff again with the bonus tracks and the booklet is really nice. Great DVD. His voice, whether he's talking or singing, is lovely. This does leave me believing there must be more to come, cos there's still so much stuff that's unreleased. This collection will definitely do for now! They just don't make 'em like this anymore! George was a one-off - an extraordinary man who wrote songs straight from his heart. God Bless him!
