Product Description

CD Description

Previously the preserve of young teenagers and hard rock fans, Nickelback have managed to propel themselves into the mainstream, capitalising on their success with 'Dark Horse'. The band's 2008 single 'Rock Star' afforded the band renewed public interest, and the tracks on this release aim to continue this trend - albeit with more adult undercurrents and subject matter. The anthemic single 'Gotta Be Somebody' is also featured.

5.0 out of 5 stars Going back to old time rock!, 28 Nov 2008
By SHA Chapman "SusiWong" (Belfast, N Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a Nickleback fan and have been from the beginning - yes - I have all their albums and videos - and live they are just superb!!

I have read the reviews for this - and I would just like to say that this album reminded me so much of a time when the charts where filled with rock bands - when rap wasn't even a blip on the radar - and the only "dance" music was disco!!

OK - lets talk about lyrics!! Yes they are a bit on the crude side - but come on!! Have you forgotten rock classics like Touch To Much by AC/DC - singing about sex, drugs and rock and roll is what its all about!!

Chad's singing reminds me of the rough sound they had in Curb and The State, and some of the tracks have a real heavy rock sound to them now.

You can't expect all the songs to have the same impact of How You Remind Me - that is an exceptional song - and the one that put them on the map for those who hadn't heard of them before.

It sounded old school to me - I love it - if they continue to produce albums that sounded like their previous one - you would complain - they are evolving - and for me - this evolution is a good one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, WHAT BALLADS!!!, 24 Nov 2008
Yes, I agree: the sound it different from the early albums, but come on, guys: some of the ballads on this album are amazing! "Never gonna be alone", "If today...", "Gotta be somebody" and "I'd come along" are truly breathtaking songs... Lyrics, ok one could really debate whether they should be stronger, but I am talking about that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you hear a sound like that... Perhaps it is "less dark" - sure, but the end result is impressive in my view - these songs really rock! A great follow-up to "All the right reasons" - Nickelback, you have my vote!

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark Horse, 17 Nov 2008
By B. Wright (Gloucester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'All The Right Reasons' was Nickelback putting one foot firmly in 'classic rock' territory. This album takes the trend further, at times overstepping the mark entirely. Some of these songs sound like pastiche - think Wolfmother, but not as good. Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, AC/DC... you could probably find a pretty big nod to any of those and more in a song on 'Dark Horse'. It's not bad, but it doesn't sound like Nickelback.
I think the thing that grates on me the most is the lack of subtlety in some of the songs - one look at the song titles and you can pretty much guess where Chad's thought were when writing ('Yes, sex is always the answer, it's never a question 'cos the answer's yes...' Shame really since the song has a good riff). At least 'Animal' was somewhat tongue-in-cheek. They've lost all their grit in an attempt to sound radio-friendly, albeit with inappropriate lyrics. The quality improves slightly when the music goes acoustic, like in 'Today Was Your Last Day' or 'Never Gonna Be Alone', but there aren't any classic songs here, nothing that will really stick in your head. 'Gotta Be Somebody' is a respectable first single (complete with Edge-style guitar riffs) but there are many better songs the band have done.
On the plus side, Chad's finally showing what a good guitarist he is, lots of solos on the album. But I'm disappointed; the album doesn't really do it for me. There's too much of the same sound, verging on pop at times. I like my Nickelback to be dark and heavy rather than sounding like a tribute band.
