The Inquisitor's Handbook delivers all it promises. Intriguing new career choices and a ton of equipment as well as more details on the Calixis sector, the area of space where all official adventures for Dark Heresy are supposed to take place.

Aside from some interesting new class variants such as the Feral Warrior, the Legate Investigator or the Chaliced Commissariat Operative as optional side-careers, the book also introduces a whole new career choice: that of the Adepta Sororitas.

The Adepta Sororitas career path, beginning at novice level, divides into three different branches (Dialogous/Famulous, Hospitaller and Militant) before joining again to culimate in the Legatine advance. The Inquisitor's Handbook provides all necessary information to play a Sisterhood character of each branch, although the famed Sisters of Battle will probably the most popular choice in your gaming group.

A possible issue with this new exciting career will be a Sister's desire to get power armor at rank 4 to stay true to the canon. However, clever GMs should have no problem with either working out a house-rule or explaining the need for secrecy (as the Sisterhood's Angel-pattern power armor is far too obvious for a covert investigation) to the player.

The zeal and fanatism of the Adepta Sororitas will surely be another challenge to all the players, depending on the group composition. Powerful Faith-based powers vaguely resembling the Sister's abilities from the Warhammer 40k tabletop make the game even more interesting, if used wisely and in the hands of an experienced player.

Aside from these new career options, the book also offers a few new origins for player characters, such as the Schola Progenum (very fitting for Sisterhood orphans) or Void-Born.

I bought this book for the advanced character creation options and the new career paths and was not disappointed. I was especially surprised by the last chapter covering life as an acolyte which offered some interesting ways to deal with alter-egos and contacts in game. For this information alone I feel that its worth the money.

But I have to say I did think that the centre chapters were mostly padding and probably would have been better suited to an armoury supplement or turned into more detailed world guides.

Its a similar concept to Warhammer's Old World Armoury, only with the gothic style and background those familiar with Warhammer 40000 have grown accustomed to.

Broken down into chapters relating to types of world (Hive, Feudal etc) it deetails weapons, armour and other equipment acolytes could have access to as well as a few new character classes and skill sets. Background packages and other elite options are presented in typically well fleshed out style.

There are a few sections for GM's which give an overview of acolyte life and space travel but these sections (in my opinion) aren't all that useful compared to the rest of the book and seem to have been added as an afterthought or simply to pad out the size of the book. Since Rogue Trader is available for those wanting to spend more money on FFG books the space travel section can be replaced entirely by the mechanics presented in the other rule book.

Overall though if you're a GM looking for more nasty weapons and gear for your acolytes to access or want to spice up the arsenal of your heretics and villains then this is a great purchase.

I and my friends are about to start playing this role-play game by Fantasy Flight Games, with myself as GM (Games Master), and my research showed this book will expand on what you read in the Core Rulebook, adding extra rules, character creation options, wargear and seriously expanded background section on religion in the 41st Millenium and what it actually means to be an Acolyte in the service of the Emperor's Holy Inquisition.
Whilst not essential, I would recommend getting this book before starting out, if only for the expanded character creation rules and the extra background materiel - all will I feel lead to more satisfying roleplay, especially to players not already familiar with Warhammer 40K lore.
