Book Description

An antique mahogany campaign writing box is purchased from an old man at the Dirt Market in Beijing. A gold bishop's cross is found inside a secret compartment, long hidden since the last days of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. At the centre of the cross is a large Columbian emerald, said to be cursed. In another secret compartment there is an unfinished letter telling of a brass chest containing church treasures and relics looted by the Boxers. The chest had been liberated from the Boxers by a captain of the Bengal Lancers and buried by him somewhere in the city once known as Peking. The captain had written to his wife telling her of its location, but the letter never left his writing box. After discovering its contents, the two Australians who bought the box return to China in search of the chest, hoping against hope that its hiding place has not been disturbed by the frenzy of development that has recently overtaken Beijing. But others have learned of their quest and, in the cold mist of Beijing's winter, what had seemed like a simple task back in their leafy riverside Brisbane suburb, has now become a deadly game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea but a lot of padding 8 April 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought the idea for this book was good and a change from my normal murder/mysteries.

A retired Australian couple, Ben and Suze, buy a campaign chest in China and once home discover a
hidden compartment containing valuable objects and a map (X marks the spot!!) to show where more
possible treasures had been buried back in China. There then followed about 25% of the book with
emails going back and forth between 3 lots of people interested in obtaining the contents of the chest - by fair
means or foul!

I found these too much padding. Also, when the couple return to China to dig up the other chest, though
the pace of the book picked up a lot, there was also repetitive questions and answers from the people
wanting to help or hinder them in their quest. I thought the couple were shown as being too greedy and
somewhat naive in believing that unearthing the chest and returning to Australia with any contents would
be easy.

I did like the book, but would have given higher stars if the early part of the book had moved at a faster
pace.

Interesting read, quite gripping, but too much unnecessary details. Maybe needs more research to make the story more interesting. Still an entertaining read.

2.0 out of 5 stars worth the price paid 5 Jan. 2014

Since the book was offered for no cost will rate it at two stars. The author write overly complex plots but the writing is poor in tying the parts together so that the characters are kind of unbelievable. I am about half way through the book and have already lost interest. May not finish it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holiday reading to immerse yourself in... 27 Oct. 2014
By Pete - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In some places, I cringed a little as the cultural insensitivity and arrogance of the main characters - but sadly, I can imagine this happening.

And so, from a simple start, the main characters moved from fleecing a local buyer to standing by and watching murders as they satisfy their greed.

If you enjoy rollicking adventure stories for adults, this could be what you are after. It's well written with evidence of good research (or general knowledge) interceded with enough fiction to keep the story moving.
