A totally captivating read throughout, 5 Dec 2002
It has been many years since I have read the Dark Elf Trilogy, but having recently repurchased it, and re-read them I had to write a review. It was actually this Trilogy that first ignited my passion with fantasy fiction, and even reading them again I find that the books still totally captivated me. If you are reading this review then I would have to assume that either you are new to fantasy fiction, or for some reason have not managed to read an RA Salvatore book. So to enlighten you this trilogy deals with the beginning of the tale of Drizzt Do'Urden, who is perhaps the best loved fantasy fiction character there is in print, at least in my humble opinion. It is quite simply the tale of the dark Elf, born with a pure heart and soul, but unfortunately in the sinister, and evil Drow city of Menzoberranzan. Without giving away too much of the plot, the books basically tell of the trials that Drizzt faces to maintain his integrity, and honour, in the face of the evil heritage that define the dark Elf society. Salvatore tells the tale in a masterful way, with character descriptions, intriguing and devious twists of plot, and written combat that will make you feel as if you are in the way of the swords yourself. I think personally my favourite books were actually the IceWind Dale trilogy that follow-on from this particular trilogy. My only reason for this is that I found the characters that enter in the second trilogy really interact well with each other. However the dark Elf Trilogy is a brilliant read, and I think an essential introduction to the infamous Drizzt Do'Urden, and also an excellent view of the dark Elf society he came from. In short if you are a fan of fantasy fiction this is an essential purchase to add to your book collection.
