Product Description

The second book in the bestselling series! Each novel is a stand alone story.

Fantastical adventure for fans of James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, and Jules Verne...

Transforming his appearance and stealing secret documents from the French is all in a day’s work for fourteen-year-old Modo, a British secret agent. But his latest mission—to uncover the underwater mystery of something called the Ictíneo—seems impossible. There are rumors of a sea monster and a fish as big as a ship. French spies are after it, and Mr. Socrates, Modo’s master, wants to find it first. Modo and his fellow secret agent, Octavia, begin their mission in New York City, then take a steamship across the North Atlantic. During the voyage, Modo uncovers an astounding secret.

The Dark Deeps is set in a fascinating Steampunk Victorian world. Modo’s underwater adventures and his encounters with the young French spy Colette Brunet, the fearless Captain Monturiol, and the dreaded Clockwork Guild guarantee a gripping read filled with danger, suspense, and brilliant inventions.

"The adventure continues to soar-anyone who hasn't started the series yet should grab both volumes right now."
Kirkus

"Readers will quickly take the bate, hooked until the last line is cast."
Saskatoon Star Phoenix

"Set in Victorian London, the story clips along at a fast pace as the pair explore sunken ships, confront supposed sea monsters, and take on a French spy. The suspense makes this a good choice for reluctant readers."
School Library Journal

"This sequel is a pleasure to read and a solid addition to a series that promises to escalate...The real cliffhanger, however, is the fate of Modo's sweet soul. His vulnerability and his idealism endear the hunchback as a surprisingly complex character, not just another action hero."
The Globe and Mail

Modo Returns 17 Sep 2011

This is Slade's second foray into his enjoyable steampunk world, and continues the fun, exciting adventures he started so skillfully in the first book.

Our hero is still Modo, the disfigured hunchback with the Darkman-like ability to alter his appearance for a limited period. Once again, his mysterious taskmaster Mr. Socrates sends him on a mission for the good of the Empire, reuniting him with his fellow agent and unrequited love Octavia.

Their task, to investigate shipping disappearances off the coast of Iceland, ends up sending Modo beneath the waves and into the domain of a fanatical captain...

Between the aforementioned situation and the main antagonist of the book (the latest agent of the insidious Clockwork Guild), the story owes great debts to the works of Verne and Wells respectively. While this does make this installment come off as rather more derivative than the first book, Slade manages to throw in enough of his own twists, and writes well enough, that the story still has much to recommend it.

The major interest still remains the intriguing, heroic and empathetic figure of Modo. His positive attitude even in the face of overwhelming odds, his feelings of self-loathing, and his shy naivete raise him above most other comparable characters.

Slade takes the opportunity to deepen the relationships between his characters, as we see the feelings of both Socrates and Octavia towards Modo explored. There is also a new protagonist in the form of a Japanese-French agent; her scenes with Modo are deftly written, and their last conversation together is absolutely heartbreaking.

This series continues to enthral, and with any luck Slade has a lot more adventures in mind for his tragic, triumphant hero.

The Dark Deeps 14 Nov 2011

The Dark Deeps is the second book in The Hunchback Assignments series.

Modo and Octavia are sent to investigate ships being sunk by "sea monsters" in the waters off Iceland. This being a steampunk story, it's obviously not a living creature but an underwater submarine (as submarines generally are :-)

Modo gets split up from Octavia who doesn't play such a big part in this book. Instead the heroine is Collete, a French spy who is a bit more mature - well she is 18. It's very Jules Verne.

I think I slightly preferred the first book in that it was a magical new story as I was introduced to the wonderful characters. But that's not to say that this is any less a good book. I shall definitely get book 3 and I hope there's much more to come.

This was my first foray into Steam Punk and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was unaware when I downloaded the book that it was targeted at young adults, but the quality of writing and the interesting characters, in particular Modo, made this a booking would recommend to readers of any age.
