5.0 out of 5 stars One of his best & definitely worth having. 5 Mar 2004
By Why-So-Serious? VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Written especially for the excellent documentary film of the same title (highly recommended, also) the two versions of 'Dark Days' on this cd are amongst Shadow's best tracks, in my opinion. This single was released in 2000 but the film didn't find it's way into UK cinemas until 2002 - even though it was filmed back in the mid-1990s.
Although he has been asked to do many soundtracks over the years, 'Dark Days' was the only one Shadow felt strongly enough about to not only consent to his music being attached to (almost the whole 'Endtroducing' album was used in the film), but also to go as far as writing a brand new track especially for it.
Style-wise, the instrumental, at least, is closer to what you hear on 'Private Press' than 'Endtroducing': laid back, yes, but with a fierce twanging gutiar hook and those distinctive Shadow beats holding it together. If you know the track 'Fixed Income', it's along those lines, but less John Barry (60's theme tune masetro -The Persuaders, James Bond, etc) and more Ennio Morricone (king of spaghetti western soundtracks - A Fistful of Dollars, etc).
The 'spoken for mix' is exactly the same track but with spoken word extracts from the film weaved into the tune. It works beautifully, even if you haven't seen the film yet. And if you have seen the film, it's a nice reminder of the rich cast of characters we get to meet. Read the dvd reviews for further info on the film. Can't recommend both highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another cool classic 24 Jan 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is pure Dj Shadow. There are currently a couple of versions doing the rounds on the internet but this is the definitive. A Mellow vibe accopanied by some choice samples giving it an urban edge. Great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and Honest 20 Mar 2003
By L. Haugen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Only when it's dark can you really see the light. If you saw the movie then this harrowing tune will soothe your soul. A bluesy-Jazzy, Deep Soul sound is perfect for all of us when times are quiet and ponderous!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible 11 Oct 2002
By Paul H. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Too bad this was only pressed on a limited run. It's truly some of Shadow's best work to date. The original mix of "Dark Days" is very dark and foreboding with an incredible drum break. It explodes into an emotional apex when the strings come in demonstrating Shadow's unique ability in creating a mood. The Spoken for Mix isn't as dark, but the clips of dialog from the movie are very harsh, sad, and to-the-point. And all of this created using only samples. Shadow really is the best at what he does; if you can find a copy of this, I'd highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars DJ Shadow delivers the goods 26 Sep 2000
By "tristanfrank" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This cd-single is music from the film "Dark Days". DJ Shadow did all the music to the film. DJ Shadow's music is mostly moody, deep hip-hop. The varied emotions and smooth yet complex time changes in most of his music reminds me the instrumental parts Radoihead songs like "Paranoid Android". This cd contains two new songs that have not appeared before, and will not be on DJ Shadow's next album. Track one is "Main Theme", and track two is "Spoken For Mix". The movie "Dark Days" is a documentary of homeless people in San Francisco. Its director lived amongst the homeless to gain their trust and interview them. "Main Theme is an instrumental score that flows smoothly. "Spoken For Mix" has some creepy voices taken from the film. These are homeless people saying things like "after you get past your first or second night, you adjust...", and "eighty percent of the population down here is crackheads...". This song is truly spectacular. If you like emotional music that has a touch of reality in it, this single is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkly evocative of a criminal and criminalised underworld 28 Jun 2006
By R. Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is not a happy, jolly record.

It is finely structured with many layers, but it is harsh, harsh with undertones of the decadence that led to the poverty of the underclass that are the subject of the film.

It is a piece of music that will take you, at least for a short while, where you probably need to go if you think homelessness is "depressing" and not a complete outrage.

"The Crow" is better, but that is one of my favourite pieces of music.

I have been trying for months to get ahold of this piece of music - amazon had it. I love the music and glad to have it in my library finally.
