Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Twenty-five years after forming Duran Duran together in art school, Stephen Duffy and Nick Rhodes have collaborated as The Devils to record Dark Circles, a mish-mash of techno-pop, new romantic and dance music. The Duran influences are definitely there and although Duffy has left his folk hat with the Lilac Time, the lyrics are distinctly his. From the camped-up cabaret of "Big Store" (a song obviously written to get ready to shop to); via the ambient "Signals in Smoke"; to the toe-tapping pop of "Come Alive", the first half of the album does a decent job keeping your attention. The second half starts off with the strange, but intriguing "Hawks Do Not Share", before continuing with the dance-pop theme, "World Exclusive" which even has a few "sha la la, la la, woo hoos!"--a sure mark of classic pop. Dark Circles is a fine record, the only question is, what took them so long? --Jamie Clark

Exciting 8 Aug 2002

Nick Rhodes has been able to produce very sophisticated music, and that warrants particuarly acute attention. His great work, Arcadia's 'So Red the Rose' album, has long gone unrecognised. His work with Duran Duran is always interesting and innovative.

The Devils is an interesting musical development. Going back to earlier roots, and working from songs written in their teens, Duffy and Rhodes have managed to manufacture an interesting blend of pop nostalgia and modern pop sensibilities.

Clearly, some of the pieces on the album represent at best no more than useful filler. Nonetheless, the majority of pieces evoking very interesting, if not intoxicating moods.

The Devils have made a very articulated and sophisticated album of music. It warrants a sequel.

This project will take you back in time to the early sound of 80's (with the modern recording technology). All songs seems to be fitted together, it combined between great pop songs and progressive sounds just like the Duran Duran's first album and Arcadia's so red the rose, it should have been released since 20 years ago. I think most of Duffy and Duran's fans will love this album. You can listen to again and again like i do then you
can sing along like you've been listening to it for over 20 years !!

Being neither a Duran Duran fan nor a Steven Duffy fan, I didn't know what to expect..but this album really is something else!

Filled with fantastique, hypnotic soundscapes (especially Signals in the Smoke) that manage to be both progressively modern (think fisherspoon) but also also tasty early 1980's synthetic - synth retro......

Pretty damn good...except for some of the very heavy handed female backing vocal that seemed to overpower Duffy's slightly awkward but strangely beautiful tones.

yum

Dark Circles, Great Music!!
I am a huge fan of Duran Duran, and esp Nick Rhodes. :-) He's teamed up with Stephen Duffy, ex Duran lead singer, pre Simon LeBon. I believe Nick has outdone himself on this one. Read more

I am a big fan of Duran Duran and a big fan of Nick. This album is disappointing on many levels. It's almost like a concept album, except the concept stinks. Read more
