Product Description

Perfect for fans of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, this intriguing urban fantasy follows the story of Kat Chanter, who discovers that the world she knows is controlled by ancient creatures who feed on blood. And she might just be one of them ...

Then she heard it; faintly at first, but quickly becoming louder. Her faint prickle of unease became a crawling apprehension that made every hair on her body stand on end. Because there was no mistaking the sound that was drawing ever closer. The excited baying, the mournful howls of wild creatures as they grouped and closed in for the kill.
Cold dread swept through her, chilling her to the bone. The pack was here.

The future seems hopeless, and Kat's life is in the balance. Is it possible that she holds the key to their survival? Because if she can't find a way to unlock the knowledge within herself, it won't just be her life that's forfeit, but also the lives of the unalil, and of their captive sister . . .

This is a novella length episode of Dark Child (The Awakening)*, first in the Dark Child series. All five episodes are also available bundled as Dark Child (The Awakening): Omnibus Edition. Look out for the next in this series, Dark Child (Covens Rising) available July 2014.

More About the Author

Adina West grew up on a remote property on Australia's east coast, in country New South Wales. She spent most of her childhood curled up with a book, and her first teenage job was shelving books at the local library, where she was cautioned more than once for reading them instead of putting them away.

Her first stories were laboriously typed up with two fingers on her parents' old typewriter. Her dream of one day being a published writer progressed much faster after she learned to touch type and switched to a computer.

Adina lives in Sydney's leafy north-west with her IT guru husband, two children, and a couple of unwelcome possums who really don't know how to take a hint.

This serial must be read in order. The first episode is Dark Child (The Awakening): Episode 1. The second episode is Dark Child (The Awakening): Episode 2. The third episode is Dark Child (The Awakening): Episode 3. The fourth episode is Dark Child (The Awakening): Episode 4. This is the fifth and final episode of this serial book.

Kat has found a place and a purpose among her new friends. They accept her as she is and look forward to her potential but are placing no pressure on her other than she stay safe under their care. After the potentially disastrous attack on her person everyone is a bit on edge but they respect her more for the gracious way she has taken to their world even though she was not brought up to it. It doesn't hurt that long held prejudices do not affect her in the least! How will the coming conflict resolve itself? Will they find Amber alive with Kat's help? Who exactly is Kat's mysterious father?

This episode was a great conclusion to this book. It left enough questions unanswered to lead into the next serial novel nicely while still answering enough questions to lead to a satisfying resolution to this chapter of the story at least. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to read the first episode of the new serial Dark Child (Covens Rising): Episode 1!

3.0 out of 5 stars good start of a hopfully great book series :) 26 Jun 2013

I enjoyed the storyline very much. The author is definately building up to a great and long book series and I look forward to the sequal. Although, downloading this book from amazon was a bit confusing. Don't like how this story is divided into episodes.
But overall I like the characters, the story line is definately the most interesting. although it took a while - several "episodes", before the story got going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great world building 4 July 2013
By Jenny Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com

The "Dark Child" world Adina West creates is fabulous. The characters are human -- even if they're not, technically. They have complicated histories and relationships, but the writing makes it all flow effortlessly for the reader.

There is an unexpected twist in Episode 5 that I loved! In fact, if I could have asked for anything from the story, it was this twist. The twist and a couple of other scenes tie back effectively to Episode 1. I like the sense of closure that sort of matching book-ends structure gives.

But talking of closure, Adina leaves the door open in a big way for a next book. May it be soon!

Kat has developed as an interesting character and (this avoiding spoilers thing is tough) watching her get to grips with her new place in the world is fascinating.

I received a copy of Episode 5 from the publisher, so I feel really ungrateful going back to a point I mentioned in an earlier Episode review: the serialised form didn't work for me. My advice if you're new to the "Dark Child" world is to buy the Omnibus edition and read the book as a complete tale. It's compulsively readable and you won't want to have to search for the next episode on your e-reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect read 10 Oct 2013

Read the other reviewers and was a bit thrown by the opposite reviews - some LOVED IT! others heated it... I liked it very much, good character descriptions and good pace to the story, didnt find any problems keeping the characters straight and enjoyed very much the adventures of Kat finding herself. A bit on the soppy side, that triangle, with not many attempts to settle Amarok strongly on his claim, leving the field to Alek's better advances but with leaving Kat in Paris about to start her new job, I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities.
Overall a good story and looking forward to more.
