It would be quite easy to dislike Brian Michael Bendis. He's omnipresent at Marvel right now...they should rename it the Bendis Universe and be done with it. Almost every major Marvel story arc of the past few years has evolved from his plotlines and he seems to writing everything to do with now multi-franchised Avengers.

However, it helps that his storylines and dailogue are very good indeed. And I have to say that on this particular Avengers offshoot, he really goes to town. Even compared to his work on New Avengers, this is a blast. It seems like writing the bad guys (who are also the good guys...ish) has really brought out the best in Bendis. You can almost sense the enjoyment he gets from penning the interplay between various shades of psychopath. Positively Tarantino-esque, some of it.

Complemented by Mike Deodato's superb artwork, for anyone who feels like dipping a toe into the current Marvel universe, this is as good a place to start as any. For the seasoned Marvel reader, I'm probably preaching to the converted.

As someone who has only very minimally been following the Marvel Universe since the end of the Civil War story and the Beginning of Secret Invasion, I had a fear in the back of my mind that I wouldn't be able to follow this. Or be able to understand, but not care about the consequences of the story on the Marvel Universe. This collection didn't let me down, I could get into the characters and it's more entertaining than just another stepping stone in a larger saga.

Bendis' writing is an acquired taste, I know people who love him and I know people who loathe him. Personally I can appreciated more than like his work, but here with the shackles let off just a little he got good mileage out of characters that I have little affection for, or even knowledge of. With the knowledge that these 'heroes' are really villains, he can get devilish lines and banter out of them, particularly Bullseye (who has assumed the identity of Hawkeye). His Norman Osborn is even an interesting character, and his relationship with The Sentry just about works, even though I don't like The Sentry one iota.

The artwork is very good, I was a fan of Mike Deodato's work on Thunderbolts and seeing as most of those characters have made the transition to here his work has kept up the quality. Though some pages look like they've been rushed a little, to meet what I guess were difficult targets for release, but nothing a casual reader would notice.

Apart from the covers and some nice variants, this collection contains no extras. Unless of course you count the couple of paragraphs at the beginning reminding the reader of previous events leading up to this story.

I suggest if you haven't followed the universe this collection is not really worth the effort, despite the good artwork and writing. It spends time referencing so much of other storylines you'd need to have a working knowledge of the recent history to get the most out of those lines/jokes, their impact on the story is fairly minimal however.

Well worth a read! 23 Oct 2011

The artwork is great, another masterpiece by my favourite artist Mike Deodato. The plot is also interesting. Norman Osborn, gaining control of SHIELD, now HAMMER, has also gained control of the Mighty Avengers and Avengers Tower. Not wanting to join Osborn, Ms Marvel leaves to join the Secret Avengers, while Ares and Sentry stay (Ares likes war and Osborn tells Sentry he will help him with the Void). And with Iron Man being on the run from Osborn, and Wasp having died during the Secret Invasion, Norman needs more Avengers. So he interestingly promotes his Thunderbolts to Avengers: Bullseye to Hawkeye, Venom to Spider-Man, and Moonstone to Ms Marvel. Osborn also recruits Daken as his father Wolverine and No-Vah as Captain Marvel, and lies to the media and public, pretending his fake Avengers are the real heroes, provoking real Hawkeye Clint Barton of the Secret Avengers to launch a media campaign against Osborn. (By the way, I have been careful not to reveal spoilers, as I haven't told you anything that dosen't either get reveled at the very beginning of the book or Marvel have alreay revealed in advertising).
The plot is also interesting, as the new Avengers go to defend Doctor Doom from Morgana Le Fay's time-traveling army of demons who are attacking him and his castle in Latveria. There are also some interesting sub-plots, including Sentry's struggle against the evil Void inside him, Osborn's Cable and Clint Barton's campaign against Osborn.
Also, a group of Atlantean terrorists attacks New York and Osborn sends Sentry to hunt them.
