Go on, be a dark angel, 22 Nov 2004
I think some business books are like noisy (im)personal trainers, shouting at you to run the rat race that bit faster. Dark Angels is different. John Simmons thinks it's not about blindly toeing the line. It's about knowing how, and why, to write the lines you need at work more effectively.A lot of people say they'd like to do something more creative. Well, you can. Without having to get a new job. Taking up even a few of the suggestions in this book will help your business writing take off. How? By reminding you to take your personality and creativity to work. And to rebel against the greyness of business jargon, the blandness of corporate-speak. To be a dark angel, using your imagination and experience to fight tedious templates and cautious case studies. John practises what he preaches. There are chapters that will convince you, if you need it, of why this is worth doing and then help you make progress. Other chapters focus on his writing projects and the people he's met along the way. Carry this book around in your heart and mind, as well as your briefcase, and your own readers will soon be singing your praises.

What more could you ask?, 17 Nov 2004
To say that this is a book about how to be a better writer at work would be to do it an injustice. Dark Angels is a wonderful read in its own right. The way John Simmons writes, by bringing so much of himself and his life into his work, is to live by one his central tenets - bring yourself to work. He's right. It's more fun (and more effective) that way. In here, you'll find the proof, a compelling mix of practical tips, anecdotes, literary and other examples, wrought together with the kind of inspiring stories John Simmons is admired for. The great thing about Dark Angels, like his other books, is that it reaches out and makes us believe that, professional writer or not, within every one of us, is a better, more creative, more confident writer waiting to be coaxed out. We're all dark angels ready to fly. And businesses will be all the better for it. What more could you ask?
