5.0 out of 5 stars riveting family saga 4 Nov 2004
By P. Burt
I felt genuinely sorry to finish this gripping tale of murder, mystery, and hidden family secrets over several generations of a family. Unfortunately, although I badly wanted to read it through from beginning to end without pausing (yes, it really was that gripping!)sadly I had to put it down every so often to deal with real life. The author really grabs your interest early in the book and keeps it, when the narrator begins her journey of discovery. To say that she really didn't know her family as well as she thought is quite an understatement!. Her illusions are progressively shattered as the journals of her charismatic, and destructive godmother Constance, turn up some pretty shocking revelations, and an answer to what really happened at the big house party back in 1910, on the night of Halley's Comet.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favourites. 11 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I actually read this book six years ago when I was on holiday - I read it in two days, and couldn't put it down. It's a wonderful, lush, read, spanning the history of an aristocratic English family through the major upheavals of the twentieth century. At the heart of the story, and of the family, is Constance, the eponymous dark angel. The narrative charts her powerful, and often poisonous influence on the Shawcross family. This book has all the ingredients of a page-turner - murder, mystery, sex, and insanity! Beauman is better known for her contemporary blockbusters, but this demonstrates her far superior talents as a writer of compelling prose. I still have my dog-eared copy - and whenever someone mentions that they are looking for a REALLY good holiday read, I lend it out, confident that it will be just the ticket.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK FROM SALLY BEAUMAN 5 Oct 2009
Another 'unputdownable' book from Sally Beauman - covering from earliest 20th. century to the 1960's this book is choc full of riveting characters, the most vivid one being Constance Shawcross the 'dark angel' of the title.

Beauman is almost on a par with Susan Howatch ( see my reviews on some of Howatch's books) with her psychological insight into the minds and characters and the damage flowing from selfish, self-serving acts of preceding generations.

There is at times an atmosphere that I can only describe as slightly repellent, which is I suppose the intention of the author - this does not in anyway put me off this book, on the contrary, it left me with wanting to know more. AND, believe me, there is a lot more to know in this story!

Beauman is an expert at conveying the feeling of creepy apprehension when you are wondering what is coming next. This says to me that this book is un-missable and well worth anyone's time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb. 9 April 2009
A fascinating, thoroughly absorbing story; at times racy, at times horrifying, sometimes joyous, others times emotional, and utterly superb tale of ingrigue - far too good to let pass through your fingers.

Waste not a moment more, add this one to the very top of your reading pile!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!! 25 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'd read "Destiny" and enjoyed it, picked up this one when it came out and was floored! This book with its complex plot, well rounded characters and gorgeous prose... I consider to be almost literature. I wish Ms. Beauman sold as well in the United States as she seems to do in the UK, she deserves a much larger audience here! Can't wait for something new!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want it it end - i was in the book! 16 April 2004
By A Customer
This book is so totally engrossing it probably should not be read if you do not have much spare time to read. The past week my whole life has revolved around the brilliant enigmatic love to hate characters of this book.
Sally Beauman provides twists and turns in this beutifully written love story, that you don't beilieve. I could not stop reading - i didn't know what i was going to find out next about the books principle character Constance. You follow her from New York back to Wiltshire and a large hanting Edwardian mansion, and through her diaries back 50 years, to the dark family secrets which have been hidden from Victoria, the narrator for all her life. You really feel for her when shes reading about a world she doesn't recognise, people she thought she knew that all seem alien to her. I thoroughly recommend this one to anyone who likes a murder mystery come love story!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great holiday read 4 Sep 2009
By susie
This is the first Sally Beauman novel that I've read but I'm now keen to read her others. Dark Angel is a gripping, clever, intriguing story of family feuds, love, death and betrayal set in an English country house. The action starts in 1910 with a murder... or was it a murder?
The story is then taken up by Victoria, a family member living in the 1960s, and her quest to find out more about her ancestors.
I was glad that I bought it as a holiday read because I found it so absorbing and, had I been at home, would have been reluctant to do any work etc
I reminded me of a Daphne Du Maurier novel. I highly recommend it.
