Product Description

The Bell family's ancestors were showered with honours, gifts and grants of land. In exchange, they have bestowed a Gift, once every 25 years, on the town. The Gifts have ranged from a statue to a bell tower with stained-glass windows, but now it's Darius's father's turn - and there is no money for an impressive gift. It looks as though a wheelbarrow full of vegetables is the best they can do. Darius is determined to maintain family honour, and when an earthquake reveals a glorious cave, with the most beautiful minerals lining the walls, he thinks he's found the answer...

A surprise present 22 Aug 2010
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A novel for children, perhaps best aged eight and up, but it can also be enjoyed by older readers.

It's a complete story in 232 pages of reasonably sized print and 24 chapters.

Darius is a young boy living in a small town in present day Australia in a large house that has been in his family for generations. The Bells have done remarkable things in the past, and the house was theirs on the condition that they present a gift to the local town every twenty five years.

Previous gifts have been major things for the town but the current head of the family, Darius's father, hasn't lived up to his ancestors achievements and the family don't have much money left. With one month to go till they have to give a gift or lose the house, what will they do? Will Mister Bell face up to the situation? And will what Darius finds on the family estate after an earthquake opens up the ground be enough to save the day.

This takes a short time to get going thanks to a fair bit of set up being required, but once you get into it the book becomes quite engaging reading. Everything is seen from a child's persepective and it does a good job in the writing of creating such. Even so, the other characters are all very well rounded creations, particularly Darius's practical and smart brother Cyrus.

As you turn the pages and Darius tries so hard to save the day you really feel for him and get desperate to find how things will turn out.

And they don't turn out in quite the manner you might expect. Which allows for a few good life lessons to be learned by a few characters.

A nice, short, and engaging read.

Not my cup of tea 15 Jan 2011
By Austin Platt VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I didn't finish this book. I chose it because I liked the cover and the summary sounded interesting, but I really didn't like the story or the way it was written or the characters. I picked it up many times read a bit more, hoping the story would get going but it just made me cringe especially the part where Darius is picking asparagus. I stopped reading at the bit where they decide that it's better that the jewels they found in the secret place aren't valuable so they haven't been sold so can be enjoyed where they are". It felt smug and preachy rather than heartfelt. Not for me.

I have always been a fan of Odo Hirsch's writing (I think the first one I started with was Hazel Green), and Darius Bell and the Glitter Pool is no exception. Odo has a way of writing that leads you to believe you know how the story is going to end and yet there is always a little twist in the end.

I think that Odo has managed to capture the innocence and enthusiasm of the young main character, Darius Bell, along with creating very real and believable cast of characters.
