Product Description

From the Author
Thrilling nonfiction sea adventure
Publishers Weekly Review, April 27, 1998

Norwegian immigrants George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen found that life in America toward the end of the 19th century did not lead to riches; rather they learned that it was a struggle to survive as fishermen and clam diggers off the New Jersey coast. Thus in 1896 they determined to utilize their experience and skills as seamen to row across the Atlantic.

They secured the lukewarm backing of Richard Fox, editor of the Police Gazette, who was always on the lookout for unusual stories, and set out from New York Harbor on June 6, bound for Le Havre, France. This account of their voyage, based in part on Harbo's journal, is a stirring adventure story, as the pair in their 18-foot-long craft narrowly escaped being hit by other ships, threaded their way through a school of whales, missed an iceberg, and encountered severe storms with mountainous waves, one of which capsized them and dumped part of their meager food supply.

Finally, after 55 days they arrived at Britain's Scilly Islands. Although they received considerable publicity, the public saw their achievement as a stunt. Returning to America they picked up their lives, married, had children and enjoyed some prosperity working on the sea. Harbo died in 1908, Samuelsen in 1946.

Readers who enjoy tales of humans pitted against the elements will find this work by freelancer Shaw thrilling. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic voyage, 5 Feb 1999
By A Customer
One of the better oceanic adventures I've read in a while. Very descriptive writing. One book that you kind of fall into and forget you're reading at all-- you are there with them in that boat. Much better than The Perfect Storm, which I liked. More exciting than Kon Tiki, although that was good, too. It was very close to Shackleton's adventures in the Arctic by Lansing which is my favorite adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare breed of man, 17 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Two men ROWING across the Atlantic Ocean. Need I write more? Motivated by the desire to be something more than common immigrant fishermen living in New Jersey. They fought the sea and their bodies to achieve a goal that most can only dream about. You will be amazed that you have never heard their names before. Better late than never!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A review from Our Time, 20 Nov 1998
By A Customer
"Daring the Sea recounts an 1896 adventure of two immigrant Norwegians tantamount in accomplishment to the famed solo flight of Charles Lindbergh. Like Lindy, these two attempted a crossing of the Atlantic in minuscule craft; his, a single engine airplane; theirs, an 18-foot surf boat. ... Daring the Sea is a great sea yarn, fast-moving and gripping. It is an exciting narrative, like The Perfect Storm."
