For years whenever Daredevil was mentioned, it was always in relation to Frank Miller, who took a good idea which had been poorly executed, and turned in something revolutionary. At the time no one had done the grim and gritty, realistic superhero, and his turn on this title would lead to Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns and two decades later The Authority. For almost twenty years, no one came close.
Kevin Smith almost did. Brian Bendis certainly did.
Bendis' dark take on the hero is what Daredevil fans have deserved all along. And he could have found no more suitable a partner than Alex Maleev, whose thick, black, messy line work adds a depth to this title that no other Marvel comic can claim.
These stories centre on the 'outing' of Matt Murdock as Daredevil by the NY tabloid press. Bendis crafts a gripping tale from start to finish, and I defy anyone to read this in any more than one sitting.
If you enjoyed the movie this is your next stop.
If you didn't - pick this up, it's great.

Bendis certainly had a lot to live up to when taking on this character and he topped everyones expectations. Bendis gives tremendous depth to Matt Murdock and the supporting characters but also creates time for excellent fights and confrontations. The story is deep and displays people at their best and worst.

It has a very gritty feel to it that is reinforced by the outstanding artwork of Alex Maleev who turns in some of his best work here. Maleev has been one of the truly great artists in the industry over the last few years and this is certainly a book where he shines.

This is truly one of the best Daredevil stories and is only part of the excellent run that Bendis and Maleev had with the character. I recommend this book to any newcomers that have never read about the character as it is a very good pick up point that also provides a good introduction and a lot of explanation about the characters involved.

Daredevil stories have always been violent and dark. Brian Micheal Bendis and Alex Maleev amp up the complexity and maturity of superhero storytelling and bring us a gritty, hard hitting, noir flavoured crime tale. Similar to Garth Ennis' run on Punisher MAX, Daredevil MK is dark, mature, violent and best of all: intelligent.

Underboss is a non-linear crime story showing the dirtiest streets in Hell's Kitchen. If you thought Gotham City was bleak and depressing, just check out New York here shown to us by Alex Maleev's incredible, dark artwork.

Making this review short but sweet; Daredevil: Underboss is a masterpiece of the medium with intelligent storytelling and showing a new kind of superhero.
