The man without fear? 18 Mar 2003
Format:Paperback
Daredevil is the man without fear. He was blinded in an accident and by a twist of fate all of his other senses have been amplified. He uses this 'disability' to his advantage, and captures criminals in his neighborhood, Hell's Kitchen.
This particular book follows on from Kevin smith's 'Visionaries' without being a continuation. It's a seperate story in it's own right, and a good one at that, with Kingpin playing slightly dirty in his battle against Daredevil. This book also introduces us to Echo, a deaf woman who can imitate actions perfectly. Finally a decent love interest for Matt?

The artwork is truly gorgeous, it's a middle ground between the intense cartoon style of the previous 'Visionaries' and the stiking, yet detailed sketching of the follow on 'wake up'.

This is a definate for not just comic book fan, but also for the casual or new reader. The art is spot on while the story itself doesn't blind the reader with unimportant facts about our hero.

Rumble in Hell's Kitchen. 14 Mar 2012

I loved this trade. I actually bought this trade to just fill in the gap between Kevin Smith's short run and the Bendis run. I didn't expect much out of it but boy was I surprised. I loved this story! I do always enjoy Joe Quesada's artwork(even if I don't agree with his creative decisions). I thought that this was a touching story and I really enjoy Echo as a character. Some time ago I do remember reading New Avengers where is turns out that Ronin was Echo all along. That was the only exposure I had to the character. I really enjoy her backstory and her interaction with Daredevil. Pick this up if you liked volume one!
Best Daredevil Ever 11 Feb 2012

A great introduction to anyone who is getting into comic. The art is well drawn, vibrant, with a mix of realism, impressionism, and some mixed media. I have never seen this much attention to a combination of art and layout in a story before. Can't recommend it enough. Most importantly I think that this volume is the vital beginning to a multi-year saga that doesn't redefine or challenge the traditional view of the superhero the superhero, so much as it breaks it down and studies it in an almost scientific fashion that leaves the reader with a greater understanding of the genre.

Interesting, but ultimately futile. 27 Aug 2003
By Geoffrey M. Depew - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is what a friend of mine would call a "moving a sofa" story - consult 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' for the concept.

It introduces the new love interest for Matt Murdock, whose father was once the Kingpin's right-hand man, until the Kingpin killed him because he was 'too crazy'. Maya herself has the powers of the longtime Marvel villain the Taskmaster - anything she sees done, she can duplicate. She also is deaf.

The Kingpin takes advantage of Maya's questions about how her father died by telling Maya that Daredevil killed him. He also asks her to talk to Matt Murdock at his law offices about a few things, resulting in the inevitable "you're really Daredevil?" moment. Needless to say, when Maya finds out she's been tricked, she goes to deal with the Kingpin.

High points in this collection are a autobiography of the Kingpin, rendered as his thoughts to himself; a story placed at the end that would have broken the narrative flow, but is extremely well done and, I think, part of one of the 'special event' months at about that time; and Maya's - or as she's called, Echo - plan to deal with Daredevil's senses, especially his hearing, to give herself the edge.

Overall, though, it was disappointing. The art, however, is stunning, especially the rendering of Maya's thought balloons.
