And with the post-Civil War fallout all around him, the price of being Daredevil just got even higher. The next mystery begins here! Plus: Milla and Matt have been reunited, but the things he's been through - prison and then life on the run - have changed him. And now, in the days after the Marvel Civil War, being Daredevil is even more dangerous than it was before Matt got taken down. Can their relationship survive the new obstacles that have been placed in their way? Can "Blind Love" conquer all? Collects Daredevil #94-99.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Volume, 6 April 2009
Like other comic characters i am reading, i started reading Daredevil beginning with the first Volume in the current series - "Guardian Devil". I have bought and read every volume in this series now and can honestly recommend them all (i collected the TPBs but you can pick HC volumes up which collected 2 at a time), inclulding this volume "Hell to Pay vol 1".

In my mind Ed Brubaker is a truly great writer (also writing Captain America and Criminal at the momement) who constantly manages to write new and engaging material volume after volume with any character he is writing, and the same can be said here. This vol carries on with Matt and Milla back together and seemingly happy, until as usual, Matt is forced to look into something he'd rather not- this time it's Melvin Potter aka the gladiator. It appears Melvin has lost the plot (much like other criminals in hell kitchen have lately) to the point where he is completely out of control with rage and lack of fear of death or consequence. It is then Matts job throughout the volume to find out what has happened to him and more importantly WHO did this to him (and all the other criminals out there acting in the same way). It's an interesting story which plays out very well, including of course the reveal of who is behind it all, a part the story which really surprised me- at first, the villain was actually a big let down for me but as brubaker has done so before with B rate Marvel characters, his writing turns the villain into a mysterious and skilful foe who ends up being much more than a match for Matt (even though there are blatant comparions to a very similar DC comics character..).

The final ending was also a pleasant surpise and not one you often see in comics (something i always like) and really left me wanting more from this particular story and villain.

Also of note (if that interests you) are the covers to the individual comics in this volume- the art is superb and well worth picking up some of the individual comics for.

All in all another 5* volume in what is easily one of my favourite comic series out there.
