Synopsis
The latest Marvel Comics superhero to hit the big screen is Daredevil (Ben Affleck), a man blinded by a radioactive chemical accident as a young boy but left with superhuman senses and agile acrobatic ability. Like his Marvel compatriot Spider-Man, Daredevil attempts to lead a normal life by day as Matt Murdock, a Hell's Kitchen defence attorney. By night Matt becomes Daredevil, a brooding superhero fighting for justice in the dark and squalid New York streets overrun with vermin and criminal injustice. Wearing a red leather suit and mask, Daredevil leaps from high skyscrapers and tracks his enemies with his radar-like vision, punishing those who are guilty but who he cannot tackle in the courtroom. At the centre of the city's villainous underbelly is Daredevil's nemesis Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan), and his psychotic, knife-wielding deputy-assassin Bullseye (Colin Farrell). Daredevil fights their powerful forces alone, until he meets Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner of ALIAS fame), a skilled martial artist and sexy superheroine who is after Bullseye and Kingpin for murdering her father. Sparks fly as the two heroes take on the underlords of crime together in this action-packed adventure fantasy that will surely delight fans of SPIDER-MAN, X-MEN, or BATMAN.

Didn't think this was coming to the UK so bought the US version of it and all I can say is why didn't this version of the film get released at the cinema?

I used to be a massive fan of the Daredevil comic book and the theatrical release of Daredevil left me crying. It was terrible. But this version is so so much better.

The story flows better, far more character development and inter-action between Matt and Foggy. There is also a good balance between the lawyer and the vigilante in this version as well.

All in all a huge improvement. The theatrical release I would give 2 out of 5, this is definitely a 5 out of 5. Throw that first version in the bin and buy this instead, you'll be happy you did!

I first saw Daredevil in the cinema and to be fair to it, its not a bad film. But it is particularly average, nothing really special. In fact to me it was a bit of a dissapointment, I'd really wanted more from it.

Fast forward to now and anyone in the same position as me really really should watch the directors cut. Why this wasnt made the theatrical release I don't know! It improves on the original in every possible way.

The film is generally a lot darker, showing the real price Matt Murdock pays for being Daredevil. Theres an amazing scene expaned upon where he comes back from dealing with a rapist and he reveals his back to show many many scars and you get a great sense of his unhappiness. Also added is a new sub plot that deals with a man falsly accused of murder and Matt's defence of him as he follows the trail all the way back to the king pin. All of this helps build the finale up to more than just vengence for a lost girlfriend but for all of hells kitchen.

On top of that the completely redundant sex scene is removed which doesnt detract from his relationship with Electra, far from it, instead it builds it up into something purer and more special than it was before and more tragic when he loses her. The end fight with the kingpin is expanded uopn in a way that feels natural rather than forced, as if thats exactly how it should have been first time round.

On top of this there have been lots of small touches included into the new edit, the emphasis on the catholic influences upon Murdocks life as well as a reference to his mother that fans of the comic will love. The parts of Ben Urich and Matt's law partner have been new and expanded scenes that all benefit the film.

I really cant stress enough how much of an improvement this is, even if you loved the first cut you should watch this, I'm sure you'll be amazed! The darkness and humanity of the character have been brought to life superbly, and the end result is all the better for the changes.

I was slightly sceptical that the new cut of "Daredevil" would actually be a big improvement on the theatrical version, but I was pleasantly surprised.

This is great stuff, and probably the best of the "Marvel Heroes" features, certainly the most adult.

Here is a sense of the real character, a sense of pain and loss and tragedy. There is unbelievable action, and brilliant acting. Ben Afleck is fine as the emotionally tortured Matt Murdoch, as is Jennifer Garner as Elektra. The characters of Bullsey and the Kingpin are well played, and are credible bad guys, while David Keith as Matt's father gives a brief but impressive performance as Battlin' Murdoch.

A new subplot has been added, and the emphasis taken away from the love story element, which provides more drama for the central theme of the troubled vigilante's crusade against crime as a lawyer by day and masked hero by moonlight.

All that said: why oh why wasn't this version released at the cinemas. It is bravura action film-making, but it also reveals the darker side of the character. Recommended.
