Product Description

Product Description

When the Germans invaded Crete in 1941, Sandy Thomas was shipped to the Greek mainland as one of their prisoners. Despite being severely wounded in the leg he attempted several escapes, including being carried out of his POW camp in a coffin. He finally succeeded in a spectacular escape, and made his way across Greece to Mount Athos, a rocky peninsula populated solely by monks. Here he evaded capture for over a year, before finally stealing a boat and navigating his way through winter seas to freedom in Turkey. This, his story, is one of the great escape narratives of the Second World War.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Read, 24 Aug 2011
This review is from: Dare to be Free (Cassell Military Paperbacks) (Paperback)
If you enjoy escape accounts or simply adventure stories this is essential reading. Although written soon after the war there is a sense of humanity towards Sandy's German captors which is impressive and usually only appears in true accounts some time after the war ended. Likewise his portrayal of the local greek people who helped in his escape touches the heartstrings. Without being over emotional or patronising he gets across the trauma of seeing your country invaded and people living with fear yet still being willing to do their little bit to help allied prisoners.

The author writes brilliently with style and emotion

As this is a first review, the story is of an escape from crete after battle and severe wounds

The people he meets along the way and the emotion of the writing go along way.

What a pity thers no epiloge as its clear he does return after the war!

major work in world war 2 combat, escape and evasion
