Reviews

Dara O Briain - This Is the Show was recorded in front of a sell-out crowd on the final date of his record-breaking nine nights at the world famous Hammersmith Apollo.

Dara is on top form as he effortlessly mixes off the cuff audience interaction with razor sharp material and a star studded finale that almost puts Hollywood to shame.

"O Briain is loud and large and fast and feisty...............but the way he tells 'em is a joy" - The Times

"O Briain has a laser eye for the absurd and the spurious amid the too-much-stuff with which we shore up our hapless lives" - The Guardian

"Breakneck genius...... the entire audience was hanging on every sentence. And every sentence ended in a laugh. It was stuffed with dazzling observations, vivid vignettes and glorious gags." Evening Standard

Extras:
  • Andy, Ed and Dara's In-Vision Commentary and drinking game
  • Live in Dublin 2010
  • The Apollo organist entertains
  • The show as it was meant to be seen

This is the Show contains over an hour of extras including a recording of the show at Vicar Street in Dublin, Andy Parsons, Ed Byrne and Dara's commentary and drinking game, a blast from the Apollo organ and specially shot, covert footage from a mobile phone.

Dara O Briain has made quite a reputation for himself over the last few years as one of the leading comedians on the circuit today. All this comes to a head in the performance(s) showcased on this DVD, which captures the Irish funnyman at his very best.

The material is fresh and constantly of top class, never relenting in pace or hilarity. The audience participation is great as always (including a young lad in the front row who was persistently trying to film the show, who was brilliantly dealt with!)

I will whole heartedly recommend this to everyone as there really is something for all here. This really is the show!

P.S. One of the DVD extras is a second show (hence plural of performance above) filmed in Dublin, of which 40 minutes of material is shown (that which was not the same as the main feature) and is equally funny!

I like Dara o Brian, because he is funny without being nasty. Ok, he is nasty at one point when he spanks a heckler, but the heckler deserved it and probably regrets saying what he said now! Dara has a great interaction with the audience, and weaves their experiences into his own routine in much the same way as he has done so in previous outings. But if a formula works, why change it?

I didn't recognise much of the material from previous TV appearances, which was change. I am not knocking comedians who release a DVD of a previously seen on TV show; everybody does have to make a living and not everybody will have seen them on TV. However, it was nice to see a lot of new material.

There were good extras too. I particularly liked the clips of the show when it was performed in Ireland. Its interesting to see how a routine changes to match the audience.

Its difficult to review a comedy DVD without giving away any of the jokes. However, all I will say on that front is that if you have seen any of Dara's previous DVDs, then this is better. They were great, but this is even better. I can't say fairer than that. Its worth watching just to find out why he won't do jokes about Islam.

Christmas 2010 ended up being a pretty poor one for stand up comedy. Some of the heavy hitters came out swinging and missing.

Thankfully, this DVD/performace saved it from being a total disaster!

Dara has a natural talen for fan interaction and tying it all up seamlessly into his pre-written material.
This show is always fun, never offensive and just brilliant from start to end.
It is a real credit to his charm and natural ability that he spends so much time talking to the audience and it never feels like a drag. He takes the mic out of people but he never treads into making them feel uncomfortable, its all like good banter with friends. And I think this is one of his greatest qualities as a comic, he is friendly.

The material its self is sharp and well observed. He spends some time on topics, such as family and kids, that dont always register with me. This doesnt stop it from being hilarious.

Overall, the shining moment in Daras career so far and a stand up dvd that must be added to the collection.

I saw the show a couple of times with different people and we all loved it. It's the best stand-up I've seen in years (and I've seen a lot of stand-up). His timing is spot on, the delivery is exhausting and the whole show is a great mix of surreal and real-life stuff. The way he teases the audience and weaves stuff around what they do for a living is spectacular. You'll never view mouthwash in the same way again.

Without doubt Dara O Briain is the funniest and most consistently funny comedians I have ever seen. Previous material of his I have seen has been brilliant, especially the seamless switches between audience and material. This how feels a lot more personal, as O Briain opens up a little more to us, talking about his own life rather than more abstract observations. However, the audience material doesn't quite work. Certainly there are flashes, and I would argue that he didn't have a lot to work with compared with other shows I have seen, and unfortunately this let's the show down. It never quite feels like it takes off.
Undoubtedly one of the all time greats, this is really good, but not his best. Still a good buy though :)

I don't think this is his best DVD, but even when he's not hitting the heights he's still a 5 star performer. Why isn't it his best? Partly that's the audience, not there was anything wrong with them, but the interaction with them is merely average. However when you're recording a DVD you must pray that you get a good audience because it makes such a difference. I've always thought his interaction with the audience is the best and funniest part of his shows, but on this occasion it doesn't take off in the way that it often does. One example - the banter with the 14 year old in this audience is clearly nothing like as funny as the 16 year old "electricianologist" captured on the "Talks Funny" DVD.

Incidentally if you've never seen Dara chatting to the "electricianologist" then buy that DVD now - it's worth it for that section alone.

There's also one bit that is I think a mistake. We have that section where he asks members of the audience what they do for a living and that's the starting point for a conversation. Normally he's incredibly good at this, but here he tells the audience that they can make up what they like, he's not bothered whether it's true or not. One member of the audience duly obliges by saying he's a brain surgeon and he once took some spanners out of someones head. Perhaps it's just me, but that struck me as silly rather than funny. The great thing about the Solero man and the oil man from Reading on the "Talks Funny" DVD is that they're true stories, and funnier for being based on reality.

Well worth buying, but nevertheless not his best.
