Daphne Oram is a fascinating figure in electronic music for a variety of reasons--among them, she was the founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the building of which she directed after having carried out late night experimentation using the beeb's equipment for years. One year after this culmination of her work at the BBC, she left to follow her own muse in her home studio in Kent. Young Americans' release of the archival material contained herein gives us access to the sound world of a truly visionary artist. Dark and melancholy for the most part--ghostly in the best sense--a variety of materials handled with great elan. If you are at all interested in the world of early electronic music or in the works of maverick composers, pick this up before it disappears.
