Book Description

15 Mar 2010
Written between 1308 and 1321, this evocative, moving and often startling epic poem is widely considered to be the last great work of medieval literature and the first great work of the Renaissance - straddling two worlds on the brink of change. As one of the world's enduring literary heavyweights, its profound Christian message and detailed social and political commentary of fourteenth-century Italy weave a rich tapestry of interpretation, meaning and symbolism. Dante's allegorical analysis of the mystery of divine revelation to the unsuspecting human soul is beautifully conveyed as a subtle journey of wonder and self- discovery, made personal by character (and sinners) drawn from his own lineage, contemporary Florentine life, mythology and the Bible. From the pilgrim's deepening insight into the workings of evil and moral choice (Hell) through to the dramatization of the nature and purpose of moral conversion (Purgatory) to the blissfully mystical ascent before God (Paradise), Dante's cosmic vision remains unparalleled. With 135 illustrations by Gustave Doré.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine and Definitely No Comedy! 9 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A truly frightening, beautiful and thought-provoking account of a human being's vision of the realms of the hereafter. I had read Dan Brown's "Inferno" and was interested in familiarising myself afterwards with various things mentioned in it, including Dante's Inferno and the architecture that Mr Brown describes, and I was amazed by Dante's incredible poetry and sense of drama.

On the Kindle, I was not totally keen on the layout - even with adjustments there was not much to a page, which interrupted the flow a bit, but I quickly got used to it and was able to make it work.

Whether people choose to read this work on the Kindle or as a real printed book, I totally recommend it to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars not really suitable for Kindle 11 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
obviously the content is great as it is a classic but it hasn't really converted well to kindle. The font is quite large and there are a lot of spaces inbetween the lines. this makes it quite difficult to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine 1 May 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
LARGE hardback book with beautiful drawings by Gustave Dore. For the uninitiated I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with the text before buying-but for the £10.92 price I paid this was worth every penny. If you want to read Dante's classic in luxury this is the version to go for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book 1 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book as we are publishing a book on Dante and astrology - I needed something to check the author's work against and this is superb. The stunning illustrations really help a complete novice to grasp the bigger picture. Buy it!

Amazing visuals, which enhances the narrative. I have always heard of Dante, but this book fills all the gaps and provides comprehensive information

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreadable formatting 5 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having already got the printed version, I was after a kindle version to take with me. Unfortunately the formatting of this edition renders it unreadable. Avoid.

3.0 out of 5 stars A classic - but difficult to read 30 Jun 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a classical Work or art, and intersting to see for real, but since it is written in verse and in an archaic language, it is difficult to read. Each chapter contains brief summaries of the chapter, and I had to cheat and only read these.
