5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, 17 Feb 2008

In one word - fantastic! Welcome to Venice in 1756. Horrific murders are about to happen and the best person to solve the crime is Pietro Viravolta who is also known as the Black Orchid and currently awaiting execution in prison. Bring in to the mix Pietro's best friend Casanova and you have two people determined to prevent their own deaths by solving those of others.

It's a good mix of history and crime and linked to `The Historian' and `Labyrinth' neither of which I have yet read and therefore unable to comment on. It will take you a little time to get into the book; I stopped trying to pronounce names etc and just enjoyed the fabulous narrative. The description is amazing and as the crimes unfold you are treated to the wonderful world of Dante - a big plus for me!

I can't recommend this book enough and I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read., 19 Jul 2007
By mark eliot "eliot1966" (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) - See all my reviews
This was one of those occasions when I stumbled upon a new writer (to me)in a bookshop and I'm really pleased that I did. Style wise it reminded me of the superb 'The Historian,' and if you like a many layered book with real effort made to get the background detail in place and to allow the plot to be crafted so that the central characters are there with you; then give this book a try. It requires attention, it asks questions, it is a fine blend of thriller and mystery. The main hero 'The Black Orchid' is something of the 'special agent' and the satanic overtones and 'Dante' killings leads to an exciting thriller.

1.0 out of 5 stars Silliness in Venice, 17 Mar 2009
By Feanor (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dante Trap (Paperback)
There seems to be quite a fascination with Dante these days. There was Matthew Pearl's Dante Club, and now there's Arnaud Delalande's The Dante Trap. Both novels use Dante's Inferno as inspiration for wild murders based on the various tortures faced by the damned in the great Florentine's work. It's painful when real historical characters are suddenly transformed into detectives (I've seen Newton and Dante in this role), so I'm grieved to say that in the former book a bunch of American poets (led by Longfellow) track down the killer. In the latter, set a century or so earlier in Venice, Viravolta, the dashing spy and friend of Casanova, is tasked to uncover a murderous plot against the state. Actors die in Dantean fashion, secret societies abound, and altogether, this silly book becomes sillier and more far-fetched with every page. Add to that a translation that makes large parts of it read like a history text, and I'm surprised I managed to finish it.
