Danny Kaye As the first performer ever to be personally requested by His Highness to headline a Command Performance, Danny Kaye was literally both King of Jesters and Jester of Kings. 5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched and fascinating look at a talented but troubled performer's career 9 Nov 2012
By Jim Korkis - Published on Amazon.com
A well researched and fascinating look at a troubled but talented performer by an author well known for his clear, even-handed writing style that has garnered him many fans over the years. As in his other books, Koenig presents just the facts without indulging in psychological assumptions behind the stories. While Koenig is sometimes discreet in talking about things, he is never dishonest or misleading. This is not a snarky tabloid look at a performer who could generate strong emotions, both positive and negative, but Koenig does not avoid the blemishes. He just does not focus on them. The book covers the entire career of Kaye and is organized in such a way that a reader can simply jump to a particular project and read a satisfyingly complete glimpse into its origin, development and conclusion. In the handful of sections where I have some particular expertise and knowledge, I was both pleased and surprised at the new information and perspective that Koenig shared. I found myself flipping through the book to just skim a section and an hour later had read many pages beyond what I originally intended without realizing the passage of time. At best, I am a casual fan of Kaye but my interest in old movies, television and stage was greatly rewarded by this book. At the end of the book, in tiny type are almost a dozen pages of notes and sources demonstrating the author's commitment to tell a story in a way it has never been told previously. I would recommend the book not just to fans of Kaye but fans of entertainment biographies. It is fun, fair and fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at a remarkable career. 11 Nov 2012
By Robert S. Ray - Published on Amazon.com
David Koenig provides an in-depth look at the career of Danny Kaye in this entertaining, thoroughly researched biography. Spanning Broadway, films, television and more, Kaye had a remarkable career arc and it's all here, film by film, show by show, from his early success in Lady in the Dark, through his films for Goldwyn, Paramount and others, his hit television show, back to Broadway and beyond. It's all about the work and as such it's first-rate. Written in a detailed yet easily readable style, this book is the perfect reference for all fans of Danny Kaye. It's organized by project and, as such, makes the perfect reference book you can pull off the shelf long after you've read it page by page. It's a must for anyone interested in Danny Kaye or the golden era of American entertainment in which he played such an important part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Class A-1 Celebrity Biography 11 Nov 2012
By Herbie J Pilato - Published on Amazon.com
From the elegant front and back covers to everything else in between (including rare photographs and perspectives), this book is a thoroughly-researched, extremely well-written, and very detailed biography of the genius that was Danny Kaye. Author David Koenig chronicles Kaye's life with so much precision and enthusiasm, this work becomes one of the most delightful entertainment books of 2012. A fantastic job!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dull 14 May 2013
By Walter P. Sheppard - Published on Amazon.com

This is not a biography, which is what I was hoping for when I bought the book. It is, instead, a reference book of Kaye's movies, stage appearances, television shows, and the like. It provides behind the scenes information about the creation and production of each, plus casting and directing notes and broadcast/premier dates. The amount varies widely from show to show. The writing is straightforwardly functional. The dust jacket has an actively ugly caricature of the inimitable Danny.
