Ariana Von Gotthard is the daughter of a wealthy Berlin man who witnesses the way her country is being torn apart in the run up to the Second World War. Her father decides to help his children escape from Germany, and after getting his son to Switzerland, he returns to Berlin for Ariana, but is executed as a traitor. Unsure as to the fate of both her brother and father, Ariana marries a German soldier who is killed in the war. She then flees to America with her unborn child and in New York attempts to build a new life, hoping that she will be re-united with her long-lost brother.

Say what you will about Danielle Steel it's true her books are not high brow works of literature but they are none-the-less entertaining.

The TV adaptations of her books are exactly the same not fantastic oscar worthy movies but the perfect way to while away an afternoon.

The Ring is one of my favourites as I love the history surounding the lead character. Ms. Steel certainly goes to alot of effort to research her books and it shows.

We follow Ariana a wealthy German aristocrat's daughter through her life of privilage in Germany during the second world war. Which begins to unravel when her Brother is drafted into the army and so they plan to leave germany together to save him. Ariana becomes separated from her brother and father and when it is discovered they have run aware is subjected to abuse in a German jail but is saved. After the collapse of Germany she travels to Paris and then onto America to begin a new life but still trying to locate her lost family. As with most Danielle Steel stories it is about a spirited young woman who is a survivor.

My only gripe is that Ms. Steel seems to derive drama from loss and tragedy. You can't fault her it certainly is dramatic but after a while you do start to wish she'd leave her characters alone to be happy for just a little while but instead she rips something else from them. It does get a little depressing after a while but there is always a happy ending of some description so she does make up for it in the end.

In fact this story does have an unusually happy ending which is probably why i like it so much as while the lead character endures many hardships she doesn't have quite so much taken from her as with other heroines and gets a much happier ending as a consequence.

This has got to be one of her best books adapted for a movie. The ring is set against the backdrop of the 2nd world war in Hitler's Germany. It shows a side to the war not hitherto depicted in other 2nd world war movies. By that I mean that even the average German families suffered from the cruelty of the Nazis, if they in any way did not support the war or associated with foreigners who were on the Nazi hit list. It tells that tale of this German family and their plight in trying to flee Germany, how their father was killed at the German-Swiss border after smuggling out his son, leaving her daughter (the lead character) in Germany where she suffered abuse in prison among other hardships that befell her in Germany, her flight to the USA after the war in search of her father and her brother. How the brother and sister were separated for several years, each having experienced and suffered so much and made something of their life until they were reunited through the recognition of a family heirloom - the RING.

Brought to life by an all star cast of Michael York, Nastassja Kinski, Jon Tenney, Linda Lavin, Tim Dakey amongst others, this movie will pull at your heart strings and it is one you will watch over and over again. You cannot go wrong with this DVD.

I read the book first not knowing a film had been made also, so had to buy It. Anyone who loves the work of Danielle Steel will not be dissapointed with this DVD. There were slight changes in the film to the book but it did not alter the story at all. I found it just as exciting as the book and the characters chosen were excellent. It was a long film but never got fed up with the story as you could not wait for what happened next, even though I had just read the book Very entertaining and would recomend this film to anyone who loves an unusual story.

Really good, exciting, hearwarming movie. The characters are good and the actors are amazing. We are used to watch her movies translated by really, really bad actors. But this time it was a joy to watch! I strongly recommend it to everyone! (Girls, you can even make your boyfriends watch this with you and they wont look at it as a suffer!!)

I like this story. I am a male with deep emotional feelings, at the climax of the film my throat constricts, the tears flow and my handkerchief becomes saturated....It happens everytime I watch 'The Ring'. The wife giggles at my sensitiveness and we both end up having a lengthy bout of subdued laughter.

A really beautifully movie with moving and blissful phases throughout, this is a movie I would watch more than once. It really gives you an idea of what it was like in that era.
