The unqualified delight getting its premier on this disc turns out not to be the much-anticipated Daniel Variations but its companion piece, the Variations for Vibes, Pianos and Strings. It's a sparkling, profoundly pleasurable piece of music and for my money one of the best works that Reich has produced in recent years, if not decades, expertly and vivaciously performed here by the London Sinfonietta in a recording that makes you feel not only as if you're sitting in the studio with them but are right in the middle of the ensemble. That's not of itself to underplay Daniel Variations, which is a fascinating piece - considerably darker in places than any Reich before it and reminiscent at times, to me at least, of his mid-90s City Life. Comparisons with the utterly lovable Variations for Vibes etc. may not do it any favours, but I suspect it may also suffer next to the clarity and energy of the London recording. Both the playing and the recording come off as a little flat next to the latter, which come to think of it may also have been a problem with Reich's last release, You Are Variations, recorded by the same crew (and is it just me or does the LA Master Chorale sound just the tiniest bit out of tune with the ensemble from time to time? Probably just me...). I'd like very much to hear it done by another group and chorus, so one star off for that. But even if it were only for the Variations for Vibes this is a must-have.
