Amazon.co.uk Review

An unlikely success story, Solid Silver is a triumph for grey-bearded folk-club journeyman Mike Silver and very definitely something of a fillip for little guys on little labels everywhere.

In an era of great statistical predictability--where big silly money, strategic marketing and youth brainwashing rule the pop roost--newcomer (though he was briefly signed to Elton John's Rocket Records in 1973) Mike Silver is a veritable anathema. Not as good looking as Robbie Williams, almost as pensionable as Sir Mick Jagger and about as likely to condescend to appear on Top of the Pops as the Clash, singer-songwriter Silver appears to have burst out of Nowheresville and right into the homes of the UK's sensitive, middle-aged intelligentsia with some engagingly scripted songs about love breaking down, moving house, the loneliness of old folks homes and foreign travel, all of which avoid the pratfalls of grand emotional gesturing by honing in on the finer details of humdrum activity and everyday dialogue. Not bad at all for a hitherto-unacknowledged Cornwall-based chap whose voice can be likened to Peter Gabriel gone country ("Angel in Deep Shadow"), whose muse is a little like James Taylor (only British and rather more prone to calculated philosophical resignation) and whose songs (particularly "Not a Matter of Pride") seem to want to make Radio 2 DJs shout with unbridled admiration. --Kevin Maidment

My Gran is a huge Daniel O'Donnell fan and when I saw this on amazon I was really pleased as it had only been released a few days! It is a great album that my Gran was delighted with and the delivery time enabled me to give it to her for her birthday. The music is in a bit more of a jazzy style than usual music by him, but does keep most of his Irish country style. We especially like his version of "Love Me Tender" (track 4) and "Wooden Heart" (track 15). We are both extremely pleased with the album and I will be back to buy the next in the collection. Thanks Amazon!

Good lyrics are back 16 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
I came across Solid Silver by chance.
This is a fine collection, thoughtful lyrics set to carefully phrased tunes. There is a good balance here between vocals and instrumental.
Quality again, after so many meaningless songs for so long.
Well done, treat yourself, buy a copy and one for a friend.
Mike Silver's craft deserves a wide audience.

Mike Silver's Music 5 Feb 2009
Format:Audio CD
Mike Silver is a poet, composer, songwriter and singer. His voice is clear, beautiful and melodius. He sings about those issues we all share as we go through life: Uncertainty; loss; children and relationships. The first track: Not a 'Matter of Pride', tells of a couple who are going through a difficult time; he calls it ' a one episode soap opera'. In another track: 'Sepia Sunset' a old lady mourns for the days when her children were young and needed her. It is great music to have and sing along with in the car, very moving in places.
