When out walking on Arthur's Seat, high above the city of Edinburgh, Rose McQuinn discovers the body of a woman in the ruins of St Anthony's Chapel. Although it would appear that both corpse and constable have disappeared into thin air, Rose is convinced that she had come across a murder that afternoon, yet her ensuing discreet investigation into the mystery of the vanishing corpse soon turns into a more dangerous pursuit. Is there a link between Rose's bogus constable and the disappearance of a policeman's uniform belonging to the local amateur opera group, currently performing The Pirates of Penzance? Further complications arise when one of the cast members reports a missing wife; could she be Rose's disappearing corpse? When Rose McQuinn finds the dead body of a woman on Arthur's Seat, she is relieved when she sees a constable in the vicinity and leads him to the body. He gives his name as PC Smith. He does not impress Rose, who being the daughter of the famous Chief Inspector Jeremy Faro of the Edinburgh City Police, Rose knows how a PC should conduct himself. However, not wanting to get a new recruit into trouble she does not mention this when she enquires into the matter with her friend and sometime lover Sergeant Jack Macmerry. But no dead body has been reported and Jack cannot recall a PC Smith.
Set in 1895, I liked Rose very much. She calls herself a lady investigator and although she enjoys a relationship with Jack Macmerry, in her heart she stays true to Danny McQuinn, her husband missing in Arizona. It in part explains her friendship with Auld Rory, old soldier and gentleman of the road., seeking his missing son presumed dead. Unable to accept Jack's proposal, Rose has thrown Nancy, a relative of their family's housekeeper Mrs Brook, in Jack's path. This ploy has worked rather too well as Nancy is in love with Jack, who in turn seems to be taking a great delight in her company, much to the confusion of Rose, who is now not quite sure what she feels about this.
Although, Jack provides a list of missing females, which Rose investigates, she is soon chasing a different avenue of enquiry. But there are surprises in store.
Written with sensitivity and a convincing knowledge of the era, I look forward to reading more of Rose McQuinn.

After I read the Inspector's daughter I started straight onto this book and was not disappointed, I think it is actually better than the first Rose McQuinn story. The quirky characters are interesting and believable, the main charters likable and you find yourself hoping the best for them, and this is a good testament to Ms Knight's story telling skills. I hope the following books will be as enjoyable. If you enjoy an easy mystery read in a historical context I recommend this book.
