By DocBhoy
Format:Paperback
Author : Garth Ennis
Artist : Will Simpson

This paperback collects issues 41 - 46 at the start of Ennis' run on the Hellblazer comic , and remains some of his best writing to date . This book has been reprinted under the Vertigo imprint - DC's adult comic line .

Constatine has to fight against his greatest enemy to date , and this book chronicles everything that happens during that fight .

This is played less for laughs , and has a distinct nasty edge to it , as does most of Ennis' work on this series . Characters are well fleshed out , and John Constantine's character is given further twists to keep us guessing as to his true power within the world of the occult .

Simpson's art is suitably dark , although may not appeal to everyone's taste .

Definitely a book to re-read , and once picked up , very hard to put down .

In the course of Constantine's life he has had to battle against many nefarious creatures, turn to the dark powers and spit in their faces more than once. Well now it's payback time, dying of lung cancer the pit fiends gather to drag his soul to the eternal damnation that awaits him. Constantine battles the dark forces whilst seeking a cure all the while knowledge of what awaits driving him on. Not a normal superhero plot, but not a normal super hero. Relying on wits alone, how does he get out of this one?

Format:Paperback
This story sees our Liverpudlian anti-hero diagnosed with lung cancer.

He embarks on what must be his final task, finally facing his arch rival: the desolete, destroying, evil prince of darkness... the Devil himself!

I enjoyed this volume (a lot has been taken from here and applied to the Constantine Movie) but, I feel it just came up short of its true potential.

John's character is entertaining, as always, but the rest of the story just "lacks something" (for me, at least). I also feel that John's encounters with Satan are never as terrifying as they should be, with the latter figure always portrayed as a big, dumb oaf rather than the master manipulator he's expected to be.

Definitely worth owning though!
