I bought this book 30 years ago, just after seeing the ATV adaptation starring Bernard Cribbins. Didn't read it...but then I was only 9.
Unearthed it from the attic the other day, turned out to be one of my favourite reads ever. A fine thriller plot and frequently laugh-out-loud funny, it's a classic of the genre in my opinion.
"Dangerous" Davies (so called because he's not) is an underachieving, unappreciated N/W London police constable who is tasked with seeking out a returning local villain, but becomes distracted by the 25 year-old missing persons case of a young girl called Celia Norris. His somewhat accident-prone adventures re-investigating the case alongside his friend Mod Lewis (an out-of-work Welsh philosopher) are a delight, and the characters he meets along the way are fascinating.
Funnily enough, both times this book has been adapted for television, he has been played by 50-ish actors - so I was surprised to learn Davies is just 33. Cribbins' performance in the one-off is, I think, closer to the character in the book than Peter Davison's, who played the role for 4 years on ITV's "The Last Detective" in the mid-00s.
A real page-turner, and I can't wait to read the other three in the series. Thank you Mr Thomas.
