First thing to say is that, although presented in book form, this is NOT a book. i.e., not something that tells a story, etc.
Actually, it is a series of games/puzzles, which just happen to be arranged in the format of a book.
If you look at the image at the top of the page, you can see the two halves of the product. The right hand side (with 'Survival Pack' at the top) contains a pull out tray holding various pieces of card, string, etc which are used in activities. It also contains a 'clue book' which can be used for certain games.
The large square part on the left (with the pirate picture) opens up like a book. There are a few pages with instructions and also more 'pop out' pieces to be folded and stuck to make dice, etc.
Finally, as you turn the pages, you come to the most impressive part (both my kids gave an audible "wow!"). The back of the 'book' opens out into a HUGE pop-up 'island'. This is on a base which is twice as wide and very nearly twice as deep as the front cover - at least 15 inches square. The island which pops up is something like 9 inches high, and full of detail. Different sections of the island are divided up (forest, beach, etc) with little features like a crashed plane on the beach, etc.
Having opened up the island, you can now play the various games and puzzles. There are things to find (by searching the island for hidden items or clues), things to construct by attaching the provided pieces to parts of the island, and games to play. Part of the fun is in the discovery of what can be done, and working out how to do it / put it together. Activities can be done in pretty much whatever order you choose, although you are working towards an overall 'success'.
I think this whole product is fantastic value. It would be perfect to take away on a holiday as it is relatively slim and compact to put in the side of a suitcase, but would occupy the family for hours on a rainy aftenoon.
I have a few cautions to offer:
- there are a lot of little pieces, some of them quite delicate, so this is not for the very small child. A reasonably dexterous 7 year old would be fine, especially with a parent or older sibling to help with reading the instructions and some of the more fiddly bits.
- this is not something to play with in a car/plane/train. You need a reasonable sized table to fold out the island and to unpack and sort the pieces.
These are not criticisms, just features to be aware of. I thought this product was a joy and I will look out for others should this turn into a series.
