Product Description

The most dangerous threats of all…

Partway through her third deployment to Bagram, Army nurse Lt. Erin Kelly is burned out and headed for a well-deserved leave back home in Montana. But when a mysterious stranger shows up and unintentionally drags her into harm’s way with him, she suddenly finds herself an unwitting target of the U.S.’s number one high value target: the notorious American-born terrorist known as Rahim. Now stuck in a CIA safe house with the sexy operative, it’s impossible to ignore the explosive attraction between them…or to forget that death is stalking them both.

Are the ones you don’t see coming.

CIA operative Wade Sandberg is a man caught between worlds. He’s spent the past three years living deep undercover amongst the enemy, infiltrating the network of the U.S.’s most wanted terrorist—until the kidnapping of a high-ranking American official forced him to blow his cover. Officially sidelined from the investigation to bring down Rahim, Wade knows he’ll never be able to work in the region again. When he’s sent back stateside with Erin, keeping his hands off her proves to be even harder than making the transition back into western civilization. And when Rahim takes his revenge by unleashing a devastating attack on U.S. soil, Wade will do everything in his power to protect the woman he loves and destroy the man who’d once trusted him with his life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictible military/suspense romance 1 Jun 2014
By Anne TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
I realised quite soon into this book that it was one of a series because a number of characters are referenced but not introduced. I don't think that this was a problem when I read it as very soon the action concentrates on Wade and Erin and their story.

Wade has been an undercover operative in Afghanistan as he speaks the language and he has infiltrated the operation of a terrorist who has plans to commit an atrocity on American soil. His years of work have been spoiled by his need to reveal himself to rescue a political hostage (this is the bit that appears to be in a previous story as the details are not clear here and it is only referred to in passing). He is targetted when leaving Afghanistan and a military nurse who is also leaving is caught up in the incident and compromised by being linked with him. Erin is then forced to leave her life temporarily and to live in a safe house in America with Wade whilst the enemy is sought.

This is a reasonably typical romantic suspense novel which focuses on an enemy resulting from special forces and intelligence operations. The actual details of the plot are rather skated over in order to concentrate on the emerging romance in the safe house. This is probably a good thing because the bits that we do see are very stereotypical and the terrorist appears rather as a cartoon bad guy. This is not a particular problem as books in this genre often just use the suspense plot to provide an excuse for getting two people together in close proximity and describing the growth of a relationship between them.

There are so many books out there that just don't live up to the blurb but Kaylea always produces a fabulous read. It is so nice to catch up with each of the characters in this series of books. Kaylea Cross is a prolific author (thank goodness) and is not capable of writing a poor story let alone a bad one!

With each of her series, I am eagerly awaiting the next book and cannot put them down once started. With great characters, females who are strong and intelligent, males who are the epitome of a woman's fantasy all set in dangerous and exciting situations, they are addictive to say the very least. I eagerly devour each and every one that is published so I hope that Kaylea can forget husbands, kids, dogs or friends and family and get down to writing yet another fabulous series as I cannot wait to delve into another of her amazing situations.

Highly, highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully deep and thought-provoking... 28 May 2014

Kaylea Cross writes a superior novel with Danger Close. This phenomenally well researched piece of literature provides the reader with a thoroughly enjoyable escape into life within the armed forces. The romantic element of the story is founded on wonderfully written characters and intense military situations.

I loved the interactions between the characters; the emotive response I got from reading about situations I hope I never have to face and seeing the situation in shades of grey rather than the usual black and white portrayed. Wonderfully deep and thought-provoking, this novel is a definite must for any reader of romance or military novels.

ARC from Netgalley
Not often does a series of books just keep getting better. Often they start to burn out and you wonder if the story should continue but this cannot be said about this series.
The book focuses on personnel from an Airbase in Afghanistan and on the enemy nearby. The story of the insurgents heads Stateside following Wade (Jihad) and Erin, who has been unfortunately caught up in the danger. Wade is struggling to get back into normal life after 4 years undercover and then he is forced into the company of Erin when they are in a Safe House together.
The suspense plot does not disappoint, twists and turns wherever you go and again balanced with just the right amount of love and lust. As someone who has never read military romance before this series, and who has never come across Kaylea Cross, I'm asking myself how much I've missed out and how will the next book I move onto match this.
