Product Description

Becky Mills, former member of the critically acclaimed band "Waking The Witch" releases her new solo album "Dandelion" The recording sessions for 'Dandelion' started in 2010. The album was originally recorded at her Knaresborough home with just Becky and an acoustic guitar. Later musician friends and colleagues were drafted in (coerced!!) to play on the album. The whole thing was a labour of love by Becky who was determined to create something very special. This album was made with so much care and fun and stress and shouting and laughter, but I really hope that what you hear is just a really nice bunch of songs, and some sirens and mopeds! - Becky Mills During her early solo career Becky wrote and recorded two albums "Lazy Girl" and "Ladder to the Sun". Then Becky joined the award winning band "Waking the Witch" co-writing two successful albums, and playing gigs, and festivals up and down the country. The second album "Boys from the Abattoir" got considerable radio airplay. After the split of "Waking the Witch" in 2007 Becky took a sabbatical to have her baby son. She continued writing during this period, resulting in the collection of songs that would eventually make up the "Dandelion" Album. She retained the production services of Dave Creffield for it, who made "Boys from the Abattoir". Becky sang guest vocals on the recent album "Copper, Russet and Gold" by Ashley Hutchings (Fairport Convention) & Ken Nicol (Steeleye Span). She has also toured with the pair.

I have given this 5 stars as I didn't want to be the first not to! The songs, the singing, the playing and the arrangements are all worth 5 stars. Unfortunately I cannot play this cd for everyone I play music for because of "that" word in song 3. I know it was meant to show a particular depth of feeling but it was avoidable. I got away with a loud cough when my wife walked in at just that moment!

Becky has a truly beautiful voice, sings in tune and does not follow the crowd by singing through her nose. Her timing is superb also. I love homegrown songs and Becky has a talent for telling stories and making us feel that we have been there with her.

Becky Mills’ solo outing, “Dandelion” is an absolute triumph. The opening track Amy Sharpe is a barnstorming celebration of modern English folk; joyously unafraid to employ instruments and arrangements more common to perhaps the Deep South. Becky voice is velvety and deeply resonant with a pleasant northern twang. The melodies are accessible without being trite or simplistic whilst the imagery conjured by the songs is timeless and transportative.

The search for a weak track on the album is as fruitless as the search for a surplus note within the tracks with each song painstakingly crafted yet effortlessly sung. This album provides essential listening to anyone new to traditional music or to those already blessed with an appreciation. “Dandelion” will surely catapult this hugely talented singer/songwriter towards a level of stardom rarely enjoyed by exponents of English Folk music.

Addendum: Criticism of the use of a certain word on Track 3 seems ill-placed. Surely it is reasonable that a folk singer skilled and versed in the tradition of the music of the proletariat occasionally use lexical items more at home in the Tap Room than in the Telegraph.

Not the type of album I would usually buy but I was given this...and I just love it. Beautiful melodies, thought-provoking lyrics and a voice to die for. Becky Mills will be a big star - this album just gets better and better, and has something for everyone.

In this fast flowing world we all dip into albums and select individual tracks. But every so often along comes an album you want to hear from start to finish and when it's over it's too soon so you listen again. Becky writes personal songs about her life that resonate with me, notwithstanding our circumstances being very different. Her songs can be delicate but they are always strong, her observations are often of small details but we recognise them as the pieces that make up all our lives. The songs would stand up with just Becky and her guitar but here they are cloaked in sympathetic arrangements that enhance the whole beautiful experience. I suspect not many people will hear this album. Their loss.

I was given this for Christmas by my sister and am about to buy a copy for a friend. I love it and so does my 11year old daughter (we have talked about the subject matter and lyrics..) The songs are beautifully written - uplifting, witty and heart rending - congratulations Becky - and singing style is totally natural - a joy to listen to.
