The main character is Jo and the story jumps right into it, in the first couple of pages she finds out what a piece of work her fiance is but rather than try to sort them etc she runs from the problem and sets up home elsewhere. Pregnant and alone in small town, she soon settles into the life, making friends and meets Magnus.
He is a very complex written character, it was quite a long story but by the end I didnt feel like I knew him all that well. He didnt share a lot and only a small part was written from his perspective. I would have preferred to have had some more, but I did love the character of Jo so it wasnt that noticable.

At the end of the story I have to say I thought more time had passed. The love story angle seemed quite slow and even though it was obvious it went at a nice pace. I don't mean slow as in "come on hurry up" but it paced through nicely. The characters got to know each other etc before realising their feelings and I enjoyed reading their teasing of each other. It felt realistic. Me and my husband tease each other the same way and it was easily relatable.

It was a nice easy and quite lighthearted read. I really enjoyed this and even though I did get this as a freebie, I would pay for more books from this author in the future.

A story of escapism. 19 Mar 2011

If you have ever wondered what it might be like to say goodbye to your life and start afresh on an island - the Shetland Islands in this case - this page turner of a novel gives you some idea, all be it with a romantic twist - of what you could be letting yourself in for. A light easy read, for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

My husband bought me a kindle as a mothers' day surprise and downloaded Dancing With the Ferryman as he knew that I would like the cover picture (my own house is adorned with pictures of Scottish beaches). I wasn't disappointed. The introductory chapter had me addicted hook, line and sinker - I genuinely wanted to know what became of the lead character which was due, in part, to Valente's skillful characterisation and but also as a result of the strong yet relatively simple storyline. Her portrayal of life in the Shetland Islands is superb as is the gentle build up of the main love story.

However, this is not just a love-story but also, and perhaps more importantly, a story of the excitement and pitfalls associated with the prospect and build up of love. Unfailing friendships combined with a demonstration of genuine community spirit are all set within the wonderful backdrop of the Shetland Islands and this detail cleverly enhances the heart warming tone. A gentle page-turner; once you have started reading you won't stop and I for one (on the back of Valente's descriptive talents) intend to visit the Shetland Islands...sooner rather than later.

None
A predictable story, you can guess the ending after a few chapters, also the lead character is pretty irritating and overdramatic.
