DANCING WITH THE DEVIL is a wild ride into the supernatural realm that is so realistic that readers will sleep with garlic and religious icons in hand. Keri Arthur has written a well-crafted romantic detective vampire tale that will have fans of all three genres comparing her to Huff and Hamilton (Harriet Klausner )

Nikki is a psychic Private Investigator who is smart and street wise having spent several years living on the streets as an orphaned teenager. She has been employed to find a missing girl but soon finds the case is much more complicated than it seemed. While tracking Monica she comes into contact with Jasper - someone who is completely crazy and obviously not human.

Michael has been tracking Jasper for years trying to stop his ruthless killing spree. When he realises that Jasper is intent on claiming Nikki for his own evil purposes Michael decides to use her as bait to catch him. It doesn't take long before his feelings for Nikki start to grow and he finds himself wanting to protect her. Both of them have secrets to hide & Nikki finds it very hard to trust Michael because of things that happened in her past. She is also incredibly independent and resents what she sees as Michael's attempts to control her.

Despite the strong attraction between them neither Nikki or Michael are looking for love & both are determined to fight their feelings. But with the threat of Jasper they are going to have to work together if they have any chance of coming through this in one piece.

This was the first book I've read by Keri Arthur but I will definitely be going back for more. The story had me gripped from the first page & I couldn't put it down, in fact I stayed in the bath for 4 hours to finish reading it! The action starts on the very first page and continues right through to the end of the book. Although there are obviously strong feelings between Nikki & Michael their romance isn't the main focus of the book. The storyline was very fast paced & kept me on the edge of my seat, it was easy to get into Nikki's head & feel her fear of Jasper and I liked the fact that she was vulnerable despite her psychic abilities. At times she is in real danger & you really can't tell how how she is going to survive until the end of the book. Jasper was an excellent villian - he was downright creepy & probably the best villian I've come across in a long time.

I really can't recommend this book enough if you are an Urban Fantasy fan - especially if you like books that are quite dark in places. I can't wait to read the next book Hearts in Darkness.

I have to say that although I didn't bathe this book in stars, Keri Arthur's early writing style (and sometimes cheesy lines) throughout didn't stop me from getting attached to Nikki & Michael. The ending left me wanting more and more I shall have! I will definitely be reading book 2, Hearts in Darkness and probably the rest of the series.
Dancing with the Devil introduces us to Nikki & Michael.
Nikki James is a Private Investigator with strong psychic abilities. Her abilities include psychometry (the ability to hold an object and sense some history of the owner) and telekinesis, among others.
Michael Kelly is a 300-year old vampire who works for the Damask Circle, an organization comprised of not only vampires, but others not necessarily termed human. He's also a vamp vegetarian of sorts, vowing never to take another human life, he does not feed on human blood.
Nikki has been hired by a wealthy father to find his missing daughter, Monica Trevgard. Michael is on a mission to hunt down and kill Jasper, a crazed vampire. Their missions quickly intersect and they are drawn to each other, in more ways than just physical.
They are both haunted by things that happened in their past. Things that keep them from admitting their true feelings for each other. It takes a while {into the book} to learn what those things are, but once revealed, it helps the reader understand where they've been, what's been done and why they now have trouble letting go of the control they try so hard to maintain.
Jake Morgan, Nikki's boss and friend, met her when she was sixteen. They saved each other's lives that day. He helps Nikki and Michael on their case, while also gently forcing them to admit their feelings and try to open up.
Dancing with the Devil is not as well-written as "Riley Jenson", but if you are interested in strong-willed, determined H/H interacting with vamps and other paranormal creatures/issues in a closed world, then you should enjoy this quick read. There wasn't very much to this novel. It was the basic first novel, the explaining of characters and so on. Though the ending did get good and I can't wait for the next one. Nikki was a good female character. Not annoying and this book is nothing like the Riley Jenson series, where there's tons of sex in that series, this one has a few kisses then nothing, which was alright though could've been written better.
Scene that made me giggle:
"Using his own kinetic abilities, he eased the shirt up and over her head, then tossed it across the room.

{Nikki} "Now I know what the romance books mean when they say he undressed her with his mind."
