A BBC and WGBH-Boston co-production, this series represents an amazingly thorough job of presenting a contemporary history of rock and roll music in a wide-ranging and even-handed manner. While it sticks pretty close to the mainstream, it manages to straddle both sides of the Atlantic while NOT showing the same old clips most people will have seen. The interviews seem to have been very carefully framed, set and then skillfully edited to preserve so many lovely insights into the personalities of the subjects. What is more, each program of the series possesses narrative, shape and theme. I purchased the box set to use in a university course - but I'm sure I could watch many parts of it numerous times - and not particularly out of any kind of rock fan-type reaction to the music - but more just out of a simple appreciation of excellent documentary work.

Somebody really knows their stuff!

Probably the best music documentary ever made. Not only does it outline the last 50 years of music, but takes into account the social, economical and technological factors that shaped it. Very educational and should be on DVD.

This is much-overlooked series and I find it incredible the BBC have deleted it. Get it, it's a truly brilliant documentary work as the other commentator said.

I'm so glad I got a copy before it almost vanished !!

If any VHS release deserves a DVD issue then this is it, but I believe that copyright issues meant many episodes had to be deleted from the original TV series even for the VHS... Read more
