4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Pieter Uys HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWER on 2 Dec 2006
Format: Audio CD
This beautiful and moving album contains evocative lyrics and an instrumental mix that includes guitar, chimes, dulcimer, synths, marimba, piano, bass and drums. The musical style is typically singer-songwriter but some of the arrangements provide the songs with an exotic, world music flavour. Some of my favorites are Creation Dream with its intricate guitar and percussive textures, Hills Of Morning with its lovely scriptural imagery and the uptempo Northern Lights with its urgent rhythm and celebration of nature. Of course the highlight of the album is the exquisite Wondering Where The Lions Are, a spiritual masterpiece with its hypnotic, lilting beat and stirring lyrics. It reminds me a lot of the music of Van Morrison, not so much in the structure but in the sentiment, truly inspired and inspiring. Because this song is so magnificent, it overshows the rest of the album as the other songs suffer by comparison. Dancing In The Dragon's Jaws is tuneful and intelligent throughout, and worth it just for Lions alone.

Dancing in the Dragons Jaws marked a highpoint in Cocburn's earlier career. It's simple acoustic sounds are deceiving in both subtlety and complexity; the impressive guitar work always in the foreground are complimented by sonic nuances which take in inluences from traditional folk music and jazz; but the sound is very much Bruce's own. Sensitively produced this work sounds timeless and has aged better then some of Cocburn's later work. Lyrically, Bruce is at his most spiritual, but never preachy nor contrived. Very nearly a perfect record!

This is a fantastic album. I wore out 2 vinyl copies back in the day. Nice re-issue and a great place to start if you are new to Bruce Cockburn's music.

I had this production as an album years ago and loved it! Now I'm back to download the mp3 and will relive my youth! "Badlands Flashback" is especially sweet and sung in French.

Bruce! The Real Boss (of modern folk/rock) 7 Jan 2012

Bruce Cockburn / Dancing in the dragon's jaws: Although I have a fine anthology of Cockburn's work, I still felt the need to have this perfectly wonderful album. Five Stars
Epic, poignant, beautiful, moving masterpiece. 7 Nov 2014

I should have written this long ago as I bought it when it was released on vinyl many years ago. A lot has been written about this album and as a long time Bruce fanatic (yes the boss also) I wanted to chime in. This album is in every way an absolute masterpiece. I played it for my wife many years ago and we finally realized the cover art is by the great Aboriginal Canadian artist, the Copper Thunderbird who was dubbed "The Picasso of the North" Norval Morrisseau who passed away in 2007. She realized this was the man who used to visit her often in Thunder Bay Ontario when she lived there (before I met her). I have listened to this album for many years (since it's first release) and never tired of hearing it (and I own thousands of albums). The music and lyrics truly do transcend most of what is out there. Bruce released many fine albums but this (and Stealing Fire) are the work of a true musical genius at the pinnacle of his creative peak. If you buy it or stream it and really listen to it you will fall in love with this music. It's that good. Thank you Mr. Cockburn for giving us this melodic gift.
