Product Description

London, July 7th 2005.The author, a student at the School of Oriental and African Studies, witnesses the carnage caused by a suicide bomber on a London bus.At a loss to reconcile the blind hatred behind the attacks with the Islamic world she has been studying, and despite the risks, she feels compelled to travel to the heart of where many see as the conflict between East and West, in a search for understanding. She buys a ticket and gets on a plane to Kabul. A single non-Muslim woman in Afghanistan faces many dangers; but Magsie also encounters the warmth and humanity of the Afghan people, in their desperate struggle to survive. It is they who give her a knowledge of Islamic faith and culture she could never have learnt at college and enable her to see a side of Afghan life seldom reported in the Western press. Months later, back in London, life resumes as normal, before suddenly everything is turned upside down again. A desperate phone call from Kabul sends her rushing back to the country she has come to love - and plunges her into a terrifying nightmare.Alone and totally out of her depth, it is only now that the real journey can begin... Written with compassion and insight, this is a journey about loss, frustration and tragedy, but above all, about hope. 'She has a greater understanding and feel for Afghanistan than ninety-nine percent of the people reporting on or writing about Afghanistan.' Alex Mason, Afghanistan expert

This is a beautifully written book by an author who witnesses the shocking aftermath of bombing in Tavistock Square. Already stuyding Farsi at the London School of Oriental Studies, Magsie Hamilton-Little travels to Afghanistan to find out for herself why such outrages are happening in Britain. Her journey takes her to places in Afganistan that few Westerners would ever go. Living and travelling with an Afghan family adds to the uniqueness of this book. Magsie probably has a deeper understanding of Afghanistan than 90% of so-called experts. There is tragedy too at the end of the book which adds to it poigancy. Heading the chapters with well chosen Afghan proverbs is masterly. Well worth a read, especially knowing that the proceeds are going to fund a literacy programme for Afghan street children...

Dancing with Darkness 23 Feb 2011
Ordered this book immediately after listening to Magsie being interviewed on Radio 4's mid week programme. I was ready to be disappointed but was not. Although the editing could be better Magsies' account was impelling reading. Who needs fiction when there are books like this. Agreeing totally with Magsie's view that the end of conflict can only come through education I was also drawn to her Little Books project and was happy to support with a donation.

By Mr Ian
Dancing with Darkness is a touching story that gives us an insight into Afghanistan and its people which most of us have little knowledge or understanding of. Traveling across this war torn country under a burqua gives Magsie Hamilton-Little the ironic freedom of being able to live amongst the Afghan people without being noticed and forge heart felt relationships with them.

If you want to gain a first hand understanding of the Afghan people and their culture, and at the same time enjoy a well written and thought provoking book, then make sure you buy a copy. (Knowing that at the same time you're doing your bit to help educate their children, as all profits from the sale of the book will go to providimg books for the country's most needy children.)
