Although this DVD has been criticised for not being a 'dance' dvd, it is still excellent and should be bought by people with a different agenda to the weight-loss-through-sweating crew.
When you are too tired or uninspired to exercise, this great stretching and movement dvd is the thing for you. You can stretch out all the muscles you have used in your daily activities to keep your muscles supple and long, and the whole vibe is calm enough that you feel thoroughly relaxed and happy afterwards. Plus, it does offer progression: you can stretch further, you are more aware of your posture and relaxed deep breathing, and as mentioned before you stop your muscles from becoming tight through daily activity. If you do a physically demanding job this is especially useful. I have personally found that my legs need stretching since I cover so much ground during a working day, and even areas which you wouldn't expect to get stiff benefit, such as the sides of your waist and ribs.
Someone above mentioned the free 'Stretch and Tone' DVD. I would not agree with the notion that this is a better dvd. If all you want to do is sweat then it might work for you. But be warned. For a beginner it is too quick: not because it is physically impossible, but because it is at a pace which encourages bad posture, harsh stretches of delicate body parts (the neck stretches especially are far too fast), and if you aren't already very aware of your body then you will tense up whilst performing these quick movements. If, on the other hand, you ARE very aware of your body then this dvd is probably too easy for you. Basically, it isn't much use for anyone in my opinion. If you do just want to sweat off some pounds, then turn up some music and run, hop, and leap about, this will do you just as much good.
So, to conclude: the Dancer's Body DVD is great. And it is about achieving aspects of a dancer's body. You just have to take it that a dancer DANCES, amongst other things. No one DVD would give you a dancer's body unless you combined it with stretching and dancing for hours everyday, and other exercising too. It is absurd to judge this DVD on whether or not it gives you 'a dancer's body'. What you should judge it on is whether it gives you body awareness, a greater range of movement, a relaxed space to concentrate on your body, and a sense of satisfaction afterwards. On these points, I give it 5 stars. I can buy any quick DVD to make me sweat, but this one makes me think through my movements. That simple connectedness between body and mind is why this DVD can aptly be called 'Dancer's Body'.
