5.0 out of 5 stars I fell in love with this book. 5 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The words of Cohen and the paintings of Matisse blend so well together that it is hard to imagine that they didn't sit together to create this book. I don't think I could do justice to the book with the words that I am writing here; you have to experience it with your own sense of sight to understand. The words and the paintings flow together as one...this book makes a lovely gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars How to fight the anti-Cohen mythos 24 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
All Cohen fans regularly face that moment when someone says ... "But isn't Cohen just melancholy ?", often they'll drag out the old phrase of 'music for suicides'. We know that these people have never knowingly listened to Cohen and are merely regurgitating the urban myth. How do you educate these people and turn them around ?

You have just one track to open the window on the humour and artistry of Cohen. So far I have never failed to open someone's eyes with 'Dance Me To The End Of Love', especially the live version. The flowing magical romance of the music strikes deep in to the psyche of anyone who listens. Then as you begin to understand the music, this book with the captivating images from a great romantic artist merges with the music to take the experience to a new level. In reality, the book merges images with the poetry of the words. As a poem it stands tall and proud, yet the music is ingrained in the soul and plays in the head as you flick from page to page.

I've given the book several times to Cohen converts and I know they have done the same. We may not see much more from the great man, so grab this slice of him now, before you do so for nostalgia.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The colurful and well printed Matissse prints in conjunction with the moving text by Cohen make an incredible combination for the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure joy 11 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Leonard Cohen has a way of understanding the joys and pain of love better than any other living poet/songwriter. 'Dance me to the end of love' is one of his great happy love songs "we're both of us beneath our love,we're both of us above" and combine this with the paintings of Matisse and you have a beautiful book that can only uplift you and bring joy.And the Amazon price is amazing value.

1.0 out of 5 stars rip off 16 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
I wouldn't recommend this at all. Lots of bog standard Matisse prints with Leonard Cohen lyrics put through them in a feeble attempt to repackage an art book they couldn't sell. I love both Matisse and Leonard Cohen, but this is a complete waste of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely present 17 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as a gift for a friend so was happy to receive it in pristine condition and half the price of the last copy left in my local Waterstones which was grubby and unfit to present to anyone! So well done!
