This is such an off the wall film I'm surprised I enjoyed it so much. I guess it's sort of like Indie music- you either like it or you don't.
Maybe the story isn't very plausible as suggested but it's the underlying meaning and family dynamics that are the main focus of the story and both are portrayed with success.

I found myself laughing and cringing at Dan's antics several times and yet was still moved to tears on a couple of occasions. There were some very sweet scenes where you see him battling with his feelings not only of love found but also love lost.
A truely beautiful movie that is clearly misunderstood and under-rated.

What a great surprise this film turned out to be. I don't know of anyone who had seen it and it wasn't greatly advertiesed when on release at the cinema. I bought it purely because of Steve Carell and then was slightly disappointed when it came and was only rated PG. I thought, it can't be that funny if it's only a PG, there won't be any adult humour. How wrong I was. For me, this made the film better - a kind of Little Miss Sunshine minus the swearing. Carell is brilliant in this serious role and still brings a barrel of laughs with his awkardness and dance skills. Cook is awesome with his singing and just has the ability to make you laugh whenever he is on screen.

I would say this film isn't for you if you enjoy your comedy with a lot of slap stick and insults. This is not your typical Anchorman or 40 Year Old Virgin kind of film. The humour is more subtle.

'Dan in real life' isn't really a comedy as such, more like a light-hearted romantic drama. Centering around the character of Dan Burns, a newspaper columnist, widower and single father of three girls. The film follows Dan and his family as they meet at his parents Rhode Island home for a family reunion.
After arriving at his parents house Dan drives into the local town and meets a woman named Marie in a book store, the pair share a cup of coffee and even though Marie tells him she's just started a new relationship Dan feels an instant connection and is full of hope of a new romance. The trouble is as soon as he arrives back at his parents he discovers that Marie is actually the new girlfriend of his younger brother.
The film is very similar in tone to life affirming dramas like 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'Juno' and 'Sunshine Cleaning'. Steve Carrell is always watchable and does a pretty good job of portraying Dan as a likeable guy who usually comes of second best to the rest of his family.

lovely film
I love this film and am glad to have it for keeps - the only criticism would be that the family are just a little bit too much - but perhaps that's the point.

Surprisingly enjoyable, light-hearted comedy!
Steve Carell is at his best in terms of acting and comedy when he plays a depressed character, and like "Little Miss Sunshine", he excels in conveying the emotional depth to... Read more

A charming treat
I came across this film because we loved Steve Carell as Michael Scott in The Office (the US version - by the way, much more fun than the UK version). Read more

I loved it - Subtle, Funny and one to Keep and Watch Again
I've read some reviews that say the plot's predictable, it's not slapstick funny and it's too slow -well all I can say is that is what I loved about it. Read more

Something light
If your looking something not too heavy, this makes a good midweek or rainy Sunday afternoon movie. Not one to make a trip to the cinema, but welcome home viewing.
