Damia and Afra-Raven-Lyon had reared their children in a brilliant and unorthodox way. All their young had been 'paired' when six months old with the furry, one-eyed Mrdinis, the only other sentient beings in the Alliance, who could communicate with humans by their 'dream messages'. Together, Man and Mrdini worked to create prosperous worlds and guard against the terrible threat of the annihilating Hivers.
And now, in the deeps of Space, Mrdini scouts had crossed the path of three Hive ships -- ships that were giant hulks of cell units, bearing the queens and workers out into space, to breed and multiply and destroy wherever they found a viable planet.
It was the four elder children of Damia -- Laria, Thian, Rojer and Zara -- all uniquely talented in their various ways, who were to play their part, helped by their life-long Dini friends, in the conquering and investigation of the Alien threat of the Hivers.

Now she's cooking again. I'd bought the whole "Tower and Hive" series because I'd enjoyed "Talents of Earth" a great deal. The first two instalments were a major disappointment. With "Damia's Children" McCaffrey once again brings action into the picture as a main ingredient rather than an appendage to a love story. Thank heavens for that. It began to get a bit mushy for me.
In this book Damia's children are finding their place in the FT&T. Laria is sent as an emissary to the Mrdini on their planet Clarf. Their next to eldest child Tian is sent on board an exploratory naval ship in the role of a go between for the Mrdini and the humans. Both Laria and Tian experience what it is like to be away from the support of their powerful family.
At the same time a Hive ship is discovered on the way to where the coalition had thought the Hive home planet was. This brings about complications and difficulties for Tian.
The book ends unfinished and one has to read the next instalment in order to see what happens. The three books "Damia's Children", "Lyon's Pride" and "The Tower and the Hive" belong together. None of them are stand-alone books. This is both positive and negative. As all of them are currently available on Amazon, this should not be a problem for the McCaffrey fan.
I would not recommend this series as a first experience with the world of McCaffrey. A book like Nimisha's ship would probably be a better first venture.

I have been a McCaffery fan for quite a few years, grabbing anything and everything with her name on. The Tower and the Hive chronicles began in "The Rowan" and "Damia" continue in this the 3rd book, These books seem to continue the thoughts began in "Pegasus in Flight" although at a future point in time. Better still as one of Damia's Children is called Zara, I could really picture myself in the story. Another fantastic book from Anne McCaffery, no dragons in this one, only giant bugs!

A truly delightful book...one of Anne's best!

Although I have read many of Anne's novels, Damia's Children truly captured my imagination and interest. The book opens leasurely, some years after its predecessor, the book Damia. The beautifully written openings describe in great detail the individual characters of Damia's Talented children, but it foreshadows the menace the reader expects. And true to its promises, the book plunges into an exciting expedition where the combined fleets of both the Human and Mrdini species track down the home world of their decades-old enemies, the Hive. But this book is not just about space-battles and "star wars". The reader witnesses the growing-up and maturing of Damia's four eldest children, and we even see glimpses of characters that one would expect to be obsolete: the Rowan, Isthia Raven, and the rest of Damia's children's predecessors who played such a large part in previous books. The book is definitely, without a doubt, a must-read, especially if you have read the previous two books, The Rowan and Damia..

I had a hard time listening to this book. The narrater's voice is not one that keeps my attention nor does she have much excitement in her tone while reading. This not one I would recommend.
