About the Author

Rafik Schami was born in the Syrian capital Damascus in 1946, where he founded a newspaper Al-Muntalek displayed on the walls of the old city. In 1971 he emigrated to Germany, where he worked in factories and restaurants while studying chemistry and writing for newspapers and journals. Eight years later he graduated with a Ph.D. and then in 1980 founded the literary group Südwind (South wind) and a multi-cultural organisation called PoLiKunst-Verein . He received several literary prizes including the Hermann-Hesse-Preis and the Prix de Lecture. His latest novel The Dark Side of Love was published by Hanser and has sold over 200,000 copies internationally. He wrote this book with the culinary help of his sister Marie Fadel.

Chat and recipes 11 Nov 2005
Format:Hardcover
Great book! In it, Rafik Schami - a well known storyteller of Damascene origin writing in German - puts together a narative from phone conversations with his sister in Damascus, in which she travels through the old city, chatting about neighbours and neighbourhoods and bringing in wonderful recipes linked to the person or place. I've learned so much about Damascus from it that I could not have learned otherwise from anything other than years of living in the old city (if only!).

But it is a book for those who see a city as its people, not for those who are more interested in places. The author is from a Christian family, and so about half of the book is based around Bab Touma, but that's really an advantage - one gets a better sense of community than if it were less constrained by personal relationships.

A nice little hardback, it just about fits into the pocket. Recommended!

A Revelation 7 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
Delicious recipes and delightful realism in Rafi Schami's descriptions of Damascus. This book is extraordinary for the method of its composition as well as the exquisite eloquence of its author. Rafi Schami, unable to physically revisit the city of Damascus, relies on his sister verbally describing the sights, sounds and smells of the streets he remembers so well.

A treasure of a book.
