5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Stuff! 3 Mar 2009
By Jenny
Format:Paperback
The write up suggests it is the story of a 14 year old girl accused of murdering her mother, when in fact, although this is not untrue, it really follows the story of the lawyer defending her, in both her professional and personal life. However, it wasn't too challenging, a book you can read without too much thinking. Just how I like 'em!

4.0 out of 5 stars a good insight 16 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
From the back of this book I did expect to hear more from Kelsey, but it is more focused on the life of the lawyer defending her, Lily Valetine. However I really did enjoy this book and adore Lilly's character. I look forward to readig more from Helen Black.

Started off really loving this book, thought I'd found my new best author, loved the character Lily, my sense of humour, but as the story went on, found there weren't enough characters for me, which may seem a bit strange but becomes clear as you read on through the book, would have been 5 stars when I first started but slowly got less, may read others by the author as I liked lily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read 7 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback
Excellent author, full of intrigue, mystery and humour. I have gone on to read all her work and would recommend her work to all those that like fiction of a criminological nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different take on a crime novel 4 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I must say I love British crime books usually police procedurals but bought this one in a charity shop as it sounded good...I have to admit it was sat on my shelf for a couple of years before I picked it up but when I did it was finished in a couple of days and I couldn't put it down. I downloaded the second book; A Place Of Safety, on my kindle and its just as good.
The heroine is a scatty lawyer and it is refreshing to have a heroine who has to juggle unexpected admirers as well as a young son, ex-husband and his new wife and her hectic work which she just has a knack of landing herself with more and more.
This is from a different perspective than the police procedurals and I enjoy them. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who enjoys crime novels. Helen Black is a great author.

1.0 out of 5 stars what a load of tripe 26 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as it says on the back that readers of kevin lewis and Jane Elliott will love this book! Now I am a big fan of both of these authors and there is no way this book is written in the same context as them, I read the back of the book and it gives the impression that the main storyline is about the girl Kelsey who is been accused of killing her mother, however I found the whole story was mainly focused on the lawyer Lilly, and the police side of things! We hardly ever see Kelsey in the book- which is quite contrare to kevin lewises and jane elliotts book where the main bulk of the book is about the character - whom has been put into care on the streets etc! I read a book in half a day but had to force myself to read this one as it was so boring - and from the other review saying they laughed out loud - were you reading a different books?????????? Definitely not recommended seemed to me the author was more focused on her side of things as the book states she used to be a lawyer - rather than the side of the victim! Definitely wouldnt buy another book of hers unless she focuses more of the victims side of things! If you like Martina cole, mandasue heller, kevin lewis, june hampson, and jane elliott you will definitely NOT Like this book !
