This Dutch import works perfectly on British dvd players. You just have to choose the option to remove the subtitles.
This season is when the show starts to drop in quality. It still remains top-notch entertainment, but it never quite recaptures the heady heights of the earlier seasons again. I'd put that down to a lower quality of writing, changes in the secondary cast members to people who are never quite as good as the earlier ones, and a reduction in the friction and brilliant wordplay between the two main leads. This makes the show more of a generic cop show, albeit a very good one.
This year's batch of four stories includes an investigation into an apparent suicide at an army barracks in which Dalziel comes up against yet another old flame. The second episode sees Dalziel in entertaining bulldog mode as he yet again gets kicked off a case for being overzealous in the pursuit of justice. This story contains plenty of twists as several cases become linked. Great Escapes starts nicely with murder out on the moors after Dalziel's car breaks down and he stays the night at a pub, but the case soon turns routine. The best of the four is Soft Touch where Dalziel faces the real possibility of being permanently retired to a desk job and his only chance is to solve a complex mystery involving several murders where nobody is talking and everyone has an ulterior motive.
